Default Things that do and don't...

    ...suck.

Things that suck...getting 2nd place at the trivia night at the local dive bar.

Things that don't suck...you lost to "Siri" and a 4G Internet connection that beat you by only 20 points.

Things that suck...finding out that your really cute waitress with the straightest brunette hair down to her butt is "taken".

Things that don't suck...handing your really cute waitress her tip so the shady looking doofuses at the next table don't gank it on her and she says "Are you coming next week, cutie?" without even caring about how much the tip was.

Things that suck and don't suck simultaneously...having another waitress tell you that your waitress is only 23 but she has a thing for you.

Things that suck...getting home from the bar later that you wanted to.

Even more things that suck...having to go to bed just as the amps got warmed up.

Responsibility is WAY over-rated, in case anyone was wondering.
You're just jealous 'cause the voices don't talk to you!

I can relate man. Unfortunately, for me, in my early 20s, it was strippers not waitresses. But for some reason, my buddy Tim (who married a stripper...that is a WHOLE other story though) and I were stripper magnets. Think of that scene from Armageddon where Steve Buscemi's character gets confronted by the bald guy with no neck about "hogging all the action". That was us. Sometimes it was awesome and others, not so much.
    But is was always interesting.

Fact is, you only live once and until you are in a committed relationship or too old to function "in that way", live it up my man.
Otherwise, you will spend your life making posts on the internet about things that suck...(or don't suck).

    Stay thirsty my friends.

Just about the worst advice I can imagine. Hedonism never brings any long-term happiness or deep fulfillment, and on your death bed the thing you will regret will NOT be that you didn't get laid more often. If it is, well, the world might just be better off...

Um...I'm 36. I'll be 37 in a couple of months. Been married and divorced. Was in a long term relationship with what turned out to be a philandering whore. It's hard to spend my "whole life" on the internet when half of my life is behind me already and the Internet wasn't even around for half of that half of my life.

Jstas, my comments were not aimed at you, but at the advice that you go out and eff as many strippers/waitresses as you can while you young and vibrant, and it you don't that it what you will regret. That and looking for love are two very different things...as for the latter go for it, and forget about the first one. For all the crazies women in the world there are many that are quite wonderful, perhaps you can find out if that waitress is one of them...

My wife was 'taken' when I first met her...haha.

Responsibility does suck. I was up until 10:30 taping and floating in my shop that I'm building out to live in. Doesnt seem too late until you factor in 30 minutes of clean up and getting ready to leave, the 30 minute trip home, not getting to sleep until after midnight, then waking up at 6:30 for work. Luckily, the late nights working are almost over. Moving out to the new place by the 28th. Then things will be slightly back to normal (at least I wont have the drive home), then it'll start back up in November when the baby gets here.

Not to worry there, John. You're approaching the magic age. I was 38 when I got married and I'm still married to the same woman. I honestly think that if I would've married sooner it would have been a disaster.

In the parlance of my ancestors, "you're in the prime of your life and maybe even a little young for marriage". It will come, I'm sure!

42 years a confirmed, content bachelor when i walked into the doctors office, and there deb sat.

3 months later we were married, and never looked back, my life began on that day.

I would wish for anyone the kind of happiness that comes with having the right one walk beside you every day, and lay down next to you every night.

She's taken but has a thing for you? She is either looking to get out of her current "taken" situation or is just like your recent ex. Turn your amps on before you leave to go talk to this "taken" waitress next time. So if things don't heat up in the bedroom at least your amps are ready to go!

Sorry that I apparently rubbed you the wrong way there bucko. Most of my reply was tongue in cheek and not meant as a "go bang all the hookers and snort all the blow you can before your heart explodes, you'll be happier that way..." as you seemed to have taken it (see...I can put words in YOUR mouth too cupcake )

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that in my life, I never got anywhere sitting around wondering "What if" and got to where I am now by actually taking chances. Jstas can sit around wondering what if or he can let this girl know that he is interested as well. Worst case scenario, nothing becomes of it and both move on with their lives. Best case scenario, something comes of it that lasts the rest of their lives. But there is no denying that he won't know if he doesn't try.

I am now 39 with a wife that I love dearly (that I married on a Friday the 13th... that I drove through a massive blizzard that dumped 18 inches of snow that night with 40mph winds to our first date... that is quite literally my favorite person in the whole world), I have a job that 90% of the time I love and 10% of the time I tolerate. I have the people around me that mean the most to me and I to them. But I wouldn't change a single goddamned second of my past as it would change who I am today. I spent time in jail. I made stupid mistakes and paid for them. I married an absolute sociopath and fathered 2 children with her...she went on to start up her very own meth lab and I went on to make something out of my life.

So if you want to judge me because of a TINY fraction of one part of my life that I mentioned on the internet in a half-hearted tongue-in-cheek manner, you go right on ahead and do that. Who's the bigger jackass...the person trying to get a laugh on the internet or the person who knows absolutely nothing about that person trying to make a serious judgement of that other person's character. Exactly.

the temptation is a tough fight, you may remember my trainwreck of a thread a while back, whell the girl there now has a girls night every friday with her friends, some of whom dont care about there relationships. i often find myself at the bar keeping drunk people passing through on deployment from trying to get to friendly with the 2-3 women, one of whom could damn near be my mother(15 years older than me). regardless of what some here may have thought, although i am attracted to the one, i would never cave to that, and i am trying to sway that relationship into a brother sister kinda deal, where i protect her and her friends from the typical creeps you meet in a bar.(not saying guys who hang out in bars are, but 20-35 year old guys lookin for that one thing, often are, especially on deployment). last weekend i got the luxury of walking them home, as they missed their bus, and the rain started dumping down, i was wearing dark cloths, security wouldnt let me walk back to the other base. so here i end up sleeping at her house while her husband is out of town for the weekend. she sat next to me on the couch, both drunk and started a conversation, i played the"im drunk its 3 AM card", and fell over and went to sleep. it's tough to get caught in other people's problems, keep your head about you and do what you feel is right, if youre just lookin for fun and dont know or like the guy, and it wont effect you to do anything, thats your call. if he is any sort of friend or could effect your life, stay away.

You guys are acting like I do nothing but sit on my butt and watch life pass me by.

I'm not lamenting anything about the waitress except that she's 14 years younger than me. That's a pretty large gap. Not saying it couldn't work but she's barely not a kid anymore. I'd be surprised if we had much in common.

I'm not sitting around wondering what or if about this waitress. She is a waitress and any flirting needs to be taken with a grain of salt. They all flirt because it means a bigger tip. So taking it personally is a surefire way to set yourself up for awkward disappointment.

"Taken" may or may not be a bad thing, I dunno but it's something that does have to be respected to some extent.

If she exhibits more than a passing interest then maybe but she's not the only girl in my life. It was just unexpected, that's all.

I dunno where all this soap opera stuff y'all are coming up with is coming from.

And I'm not moving to Can-a-duh. I just spent over a week in Minneapolis and that was too close for comfort.

So you posted on the internet not expecting drama to come of it...ok...got it...you're naive.

My post was meant as tongue in cheek. I stated that. My "real" advice, give it a ****ing shot. What do you have to lose? A waitress that prefers not to serve you again because you are the awkward older guy that hit on her? Big whoop. You may not have anything in common. Or you do and you have gained a friend/lover/acquaintance. I lived with a girl 12 years my junior (roommate nothing more) and we were surprised at how much we had in common. Nothing ever came of it except I have a dear friend and some fun stories about insomnia and 3am mountain bike rides around the city.

I am not saying go out there and throw it all on the line and I am hardly claiming that you have nothing better do than wait for the internet to feed up advice. I don't know you. All I know about you is there is a waitress at some bar who piqued your interest enough to post it on the internet. I have nothing else to "judge" you by. So any suggestions are made utilizing the only information at my disposal.

But again, my primary post was nothing more than an attempt to throw some levity into the discussion. It wasn't meant to stir some faux-pas **** pot.

Some of you guys worry me. All this talk about women, and love, and sex, and commitment. That stuff works itself out naturally. You've missed the most disturbing part of Jstas' original post.

At one point in time, trivia night at a bar was a real battle of knowledge. Mostly useless, not going to win you friends or money kind of knowledge, but knowledge nonetheless. You know, Cliff Claven kinda stuff. Now, trivia contests have devolved into who can search Google the quickest. Utter B.S. Same thing with bar bets. Please, bet me that Danny Glover was in Apocalypse Now. Do it without jumping on IMDB.com, too. I dare you.

The flipside, of course, is when you hang with or even beat those technology as a crutch bastards. That is when you know you are the man.

Yes, you need an adult, but I suspect your thoughts were more along the lines of just renting the waitress for 10 minutes rather than investing the rest of your life with her.
