Default Led Zeppelin sued over Stairway To Heaven plagiarism.

I don't know. A few notes sound similar, but where do you draw the line?

I agree. I listened to the Spirit song, it definitely sounds as if their song inspired Stairway, and the fact that the two bands toured together in the late 60's makes it much more obvious that it can't be coincidental. But it's a big leap to say that the song is an outright copy of anything. The bit of Stairway that's similar to the Spirit song is just a small part of the melody.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Wow. I always felt like Stairway wasn't a true Zep song. Its awesome, but it doesn't really fit with the rest of their catalog. The entire song is based off that riff, which is almost a dead lift from Spirit's song. I commend them for making it into an incredible song, but credit definitely should've been paid to Spirit.

You can argue about style and general feel of the songs, but the simple fact is that it's not even the same chord progression all the way through the end. It's also such a generic standard descending chord progression to begin with, probably hundreds of songs have used that same basic progression.

Stairway may have been inspired by this song, but it's no more of a rip-off than any of the other LZ tunes (LZ has often been accused of ripping off blues artists here in the US). I don't have an issue with the timing being so far down the road, it's the actual content that I don't feel will hold up.

I don't know what ever came of the Joe Satriani lawsuit against Coldplay, but I actually felt like that one had merit, this one not so much.

Plagiarized from the article with no shame whatsoever...

...estimate that by 2008, “Stairway to Heaven” had earned at least $562 million.

The band breaking off a thank you note and a million dollar check here is equivalent to my rolling down my window at an off ramp and forking over a 5 dollar bill to the homeless vet with a drug problem.

Personally though, I think this is about a has-been band and the surviving family members looking for any way to be relevant once again, and nothing says "look at me" like a lawsuit targeting once of the most revered bands of all time as they release some re-masters. Pathetic if you ask me.

Every British group that was or is involved with the blues scene'borrowed ' riffs from American blues artists...I could name a dozen right off hand...a few made it very big doing that..I actually thought they were the original artists....untill my dad would just shake his head, grin and say....been done before.....and proceed to prove me wrong....

Definitely some similarities even though Stairway is obviously a much different song. I'll be interested to see how it comes out.

After The Verve got totally screwed by the Rolling Stones on Bittersweet Symphony, I wouldn't put anything past these courts.

Do you think that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards deserve 100% writing credit for the 2nd song? That's what happened. The Verve got exactly zero royalties on that song.

LZ's thievery of songs is a long and well documented saga. I think that the lifting of the Stairway intro is the absolute least of the band's exploits in plagiarism. Do a Google search of Dazed and Confused/Jake Holmes, you'll start to get the picture......... Led Zeppelin, the world's best cover band.

More than forty years later? A trust for the deceased Randy California? Give me a freaking break, that's what the statute of limitations is for, just because its a reissue doesn't mean they weren't aware of this from the outset and they concede that. Gives lawyers a bad name. Lol.

Well- what you need to be comparing to is:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKC5cdGBY04

Since that one is a clear cover of the original and credited as such, the Verve's sample of it got them in trouble with Allen Klein by extension.

But that story is more about what an epic d---bag Allen Klein is.

and as a side note, I'm kinda amazed that "the Last Time" is on youtube- used to be Stones stuff would get taken down within hours of getting posted. Could be because Klein died a few years ago.

That's funny. I always thought that Pink Floyd's "Good Bye Blue Sky" sounded very very similar to Joni Mitchell's "The Dawntreader" done in 1970 (about 10 years before The Wal).

    Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Blue Sky"

    Joni Mitchell's "The Dawntreader"

Interestingly enough, Roger Waters had Joni Mitchell sing "Goodbye Blue Sky" at The Wall: Live In Berlin. For good reason I think...

Compare and tell me what you guys think.......

If I wasn't told, "Hey, listen to this song.. it sounds vaguely similar to Stairway", there's NO WAY I would have linked the two together myself. Give me a break.

Yes, I knew it was based on the orchestral version, which IMO really doesn't sound like the original Stones song, but that's beside the point. The real point is, that The Verve asked for, and received permission to use the sample...yes, just a sample of the strings. The lyrics and the rest of Bittersweet Symphony is totally The Verve. How does a string sample garner Jagger/Richards 100% of the writing credit? Better Lawyers I guess. A travesty IMO. The legal battle its battle and was one of the principal reasons the group fell apart.
