Default 2 channel audio to 5.1 channel

I want to create an archive of 720p-1080p video collection. My mother tongue is Turkish, that's why I archive my films as DUAL releases which both contain Turkish and English sound streams. I sometimes download the normal releases and find the proper sound for the film. The problem is, Turkish sound stream sometimes contains 2/0 channels, which I dont prefer because 5.1 sound is far better than 2.0

I read that those 2/0 streams can be converted to 3/2/1 by

demuxing original 5.1 audio stream into 1-by-1 channels
encoding the stereo dubbed sound to mono channel wav
replacing the mono sound with center channel of 5.1
re-ripping the new channels to 5.1

I need your help on how to do this. I tried using besweet but it was the most complicated program ever I have used.

Maybe someone over at may be able to help you. I have found the people on that forum to be very knowledgeable about video/audio encoding. Good luck!

+1 on the afterdawn link, there is a lot of good info there on what you are seeking to do. I have done it in the past, mixing my own music tracks into 5.1. Once you get the hang of it it is really easy. It has been years since I have done it, sorry I can not be more helpful.

Give JRiver Media Center a try. In the Tools, options, audio, settings tab: you have something called "DSP and output format". In there, select "Output format" and on the right, there is the "channels" section where you can select the number of speakers you have (5.1) and then, if you want to upmix your 2.0 stream to something else (select JRSS v.2.0 surround sound (recommanded)). Would it sound as good as a true 5.1? I think not, but I would give it a try anyways.

You can download a trial version of JRiver on their official website.

    Try MeGUI:
I use it to convert 5.1 channel AAC to Dolby Digital. It has several option for up-converting 2 channel to 5.1 or 6.1, however, the source must have the proper Dolby down-mix already in it. You'll get some really odd sounding effects from the center and surrounds if it doesn't. I good AVR will have Dolby Pro-Logic II, which will extract the 5.1 from the two channel source. In either event, don't expect Dolby Digital quality out of the conversion.
