Default Plate current on Cary SLP05

Can you guys please enlighten me on this plate current.

As per the manual this is supposed to be 60 mA and I do remember seeing the needle above 50.

for the reason which I am not aware the damn needle stops at 20 now.

Is something wrong with power in my home? or am I missing something here.

    appreciate the help

Did you check to see if the correct mains voltage is set (120V)?

Check the two 1A fuses behind the power chassis to see if they are both good.

Remove and reinstall the tubes and the umbilical cords (after turning off the amp). It could be simple as something lose.

Wait a few minutes after turning on to see if the plate current goes back to the nominal of 60mA.

    Thanks for the reply
I think we cant change the main voltage, there is no switch.
    both the fuses are good
plate voltage is showing up as 240.

reconnected every thing , plate current is still 20

I'm thinking your rectifer tube is wonky as the plate voltage is too high, should be 210.

So does it mean its gone bad? or faulty? I am guessing either cases it has to be replaced?

Yes, gone bad. I can't swear that is your problem, but it is a good place to start.

    +1 to What F1 said.

May be the rectifier tube is used up.

I hope you have at least two extra (new) good known 6SN7.

Start replacing the 6SN7 one at a time if replacing the rectifier tube didn't fix the problem.

Well the unit hardly a month old , I am surprised they are used up already .

Anyways I ordered a new rectifier tube to check if it is causing the issue, if not I wil ship it back to Cary.
On other note I spoke to Cary CS today they are saying if the tubes are used up they would draw more current?

A tube can go bad at any time for any number of reasons. That said, I doubt the issue is related to the 6SN7's.

Not knowing the full history of the unit or the length of time you have the preamp, I speculated the possibility and advised you to troubleshoot the simpler things to check and replace.

The rectifier tube could fail even if it's not used up and some tubes draw more current as they aged but I doubt the meters in your pre are showing the current draw for the rectifier tube. My wild guess is that the meters are showing the output voltage and current of the power supply unit when connected to the main unit. That is the output from the rectifier tube and the filter capacitors but not the amount of current that the rectifier used or drew from the AC transformers.

If any of the 6SN7 failed or doesn't work, the main unit won't draw enough current so the power unit is indicating more voltage (since it's not loaded with all the tubes that needs to run all the tubes in the main unit) and less current draw from the main unit. It's my best guess to check the 6SN7s along with the rectifier tube.

With the main unit cover opened, check to see if all the tubes inside lights up from a distance without touching anything inside the main unit.

If you have some extra 6SN7s, try replacing the 6SN7 at different position one at a time or two at a time and power up the unit to see if it goes back to normal operating voltage and current ratings.

If trying to replace the rectifier tubes and substituting the 6SN7 with the known good ones doesn't help, I am afraid your unit needs to travel back to Cary for the checkup and repair.

Since you only had this unit for about a month, this unit should be under Cary's warranty and they should offer to replace the tubes and any repair needed in case.

Still amazes me that some still do this to us in tech support from time to time.

Changing the rectifier tube didn't help so I shipped the pre amp back to Cary.

    on the other note
Since the cary is gone I connected the PS Audio Dac directly to the amps to see if Cary Pre amp is worth the addition.

Difference is very clear and well defined Cary SLP05 is making noticeable and pleasant impact on the sound signature

Looks like the issue is with the meter. They replaced the meter.
and they also renumbered all the tubes.

I am actually surprised the way handled the issue. The turn around time was 2 days.
they already shipped it back. Also Answered all questions regarding the issue with in hours.

Hope, it will be a happy ending.

    Optimistically....

I got my tubes numbered for free

and I realized how much I missed SLP05 in my system...

received it today everything works fine ...

Sometimes you wont realize the value until you miss it... I was listening to PS Audio dac and my receiver DAC directly for last one week ... Now I can strongly advocate that Cary SLP05 has the major stake in the audio signature, more than the fancy cables and sophisticated DAC.
