am I running too much bass or what?

I have a set of Monitor 7b's and used 2 different 6 1/2" drivers and I am having a problem with the speaker popping, bottoming out or something. I do like a lot of bass, but I'm not listening to it that loud I don't think. Is this normal for the MW6500 series of drivers? I don't want to damage them of course. Is there anything that may help me out on this happening? Stupid question maybe, but what about adding more acoustic stuffing to the box or something.

Do you have the bass turned up from flat? Are you using a sub?

Maybe the noise is from clipping. Bottoming out sounds like "clack clack clack" and Russ says your speakers are high passed at 60 Hz and only one driver is powered. Adding stuffing lowers the system Q, absorbs back waves etc but wont make it louder. How are you powering these?

I keep the bass about halfway on the receiver and a slight boost on my EQ. The receiver is a Harman Kardon HK680i. For the amount of bass I'm hearing I don't think it should be doing that, BUT if that is the problem I guess I'll do with less bass. I'm getting a sub any day now and that should take care of the problem. My only concern was seems as though I can't get as much bass as I want compared friends of mine's stereo's. Ya know it's embarassing as hell when you have people tell one another they'd rather have so an so's stereo-many being lower quality Sony's, JVC's with Pioneer or Sansui speakers.

The 7bs arent bass monsters, definitely turn down the EQ and run as close to flat as possible. I know you dont want to hear this but get a sub with speaker level inputs. This way you can high pass the speakers at 80-90 Hertz. You said you're handy with electronics. Have you considered making your own sub? Parts express has many kits. You could make one of the very popular Dayton sub for about $200.

The main reason I have an EQ is because so many times I watch regular satellite or a movie and have the volume at a lower level than music and I like to boost the bass. Hell I'm 47 years old but still love deep bass and don't forsee that changing anytime soon. It's something about bass I like. I don't like boomy bass I like it where you feel it just as much as hear it. That's why I'm getting a subwoofer any day now. Also keep in mind I live on an extremely limited income. I also have other hobbies such as Microscopy where just several months ago I bought my first microscope-a Leitz and spent $500 on it just to later get an American Optical model 10 for $225. Both of these are oldie goldies kinda like vintage tube type audio equipment-they will never go down in price.
Anyway I will learn to chill on the eq, but I still love to hear real low bass.

I think once you get your sub, you'll definitely not have a need for that EQ anymo.;)
