Is this setup OK ?

I'm planning to buy the following;

receiver:
yamaha rx-v1400

fronts:
polk rti8

center:
polk csi5

rears:
polk r30

sub:
velodyne cht-12


Want to know if the r30 will be ok for surrounds ???
they seems decent....more than rti4 or rti6 ?

i read velodyne cht-12 on this forum is a bit better than polk psw404 and future shop doesn't carry psw505.

Any comments, feedback would be appreciated...

Welcome to the forum,

Everything is good except the surrounds. Depending on the room you should have them elevated a few feet above your head. Try another pair of rti4s or Fxi3s.

Also for the sub, since you are in Canada, you can order the Adire Audio Rava from CSS www.creativesound.ca it is $600 delivered in Canada. I think it is a better sub than the CHT12.

Sounds good to me. Some people are very picky about matching surrounds, but it's no big deal to me unless the system is going to be used a lot for multi-channel music. For HT, the R30 should be fine IMO. The RT line is better than the R line.

I've never heard any Velo subs. Just my Polk, B&W and several others.

surrounds may be floor-standers and placed differently.
dolby suggests alternatives placements...

I was initally planning buying klipsch speakers than i went to infinity... but i found them both booring-look !

so i'm going to see polk linup this week-end at future shop to see what they look live ! it's so special how a speaker may look on the web and how different it can be "in person"...

but rti4 or rti6 have better connections then r30, so may sound will be a bit worst on r30 compared to rti, no ?

future shop only have rti8 and r30 as floorstanders so it's why i'm a bit limited.

Yeah you can use floorstanders for surrounds, some here do. Most hang them on the wall about 7' off the ground. I dont follow with the connections but I think the RTi series sounds better and I have owned both. The Polks look pretty much identical to the pictures.

Did you listen to any of them? Buying speakers based on looks is a BIG mistake!

This is what Polk says about surround placement: "Unlike the front three speakers, that must produce sharply focused images, the job of surround channels is to envelop the audience in diffused sound known as "ambience." To excel at this job, rear speakers should not (with the exception of localized 5.1 channel effects) call attention to themselves as sources of sound.

For these reasons, surround speakers work best when elevated at least two feet above the seated listeners' heads (a height of six to seven feet above the ground is considered normal), and mounted on the side walls in line with or slightly behind the audience (figure below). If you are using front-firing speakers, they should face each other so that the sound is projected over the listeners' heads."

As an owner & current user of the R30's, I can say you will have no sound quality issues if you use them as surrounds. I use them as the L&R main speakers in my setup. I think they are super!

As far as using them for surrounds go, like somebody said before, surrounds should be mounted above your head. But, if you can't do that, sure then go ahead and fire up the R30's.

i don't have sidewalls, so the only alternatives are;

1. bookshelf on stands

2. another pair of floorstanders...

but, when you add the cost of stands to bookshelf, you arrive to nearly the cost of floorstanders which, IMO, will look better !

I understand now, R30s sound like a good fit. You might want to check out a Paradigm dealer and have a listen to their subs and speakers. I think they are a better value than the Polk subs especially in Canada.

I'm in Toronto. Never been around Montreal or Quebec but would like to visit one day.

I agree with Gatemplin. Canadians get a better deal on Paradigm, Energy, PSB, Athena, Totem. You might want to give them a try. You should demo some PSB. They're great speakers and are a better value than Polk if you're in Canada.

psb speakers are sold in "Centre Hi-Fi" here in Quebec province.

these audio stores are very small and they even don't have a couch to sit and compare speakers...

Plus, they only carry PSB, so it's biased and you can't compare in the store !

Yeah Polk is great, but they're not for everyone. Listen to as many different types of speakers as you can. Let your ears decide.

It's better for you to go out and audition the speakers to find the one you prefer.

For your question regarding Polk vs Klipsch...It's presonal preferance. I like the Klipsch sound more than Polk. They're completely different animals. You'll either love horns or hate them. Klipsch speakers are horn loaded for very high efficiency.

Polks will give you a mellower, warmer and a more defined soundstage (not sure about this though because you're comparing their Referece line to Polk's RT).

The Klipsch are much more dynamic and give you bigger sound. They produce instruments with realistic dynamics and have a better sense of 'air'. Due to their high sensitivity, you have to make sure you have decent source and amplification. Any weakness in the audio chain will can clearly be heard.

When you go to audition the RF-25, make sure you give the 35 a listen as well. I went to the dealer planning to buy a pair of RF-15 or 25 but happily walked out with a pair of RF-35. The 35 have better mids, highs, bass and slam/dynamics. They're also more efficient than the others.
