Sub Isolation

Been readin' a lotta posts about subs vs. NAF (neighbor acceptance factor). So, to head off trouble at the pass, I set my Dayton Titanic (don't even start!) on a $3 cement paving stone on carpet over a cement subfloor to add mass and hopefully reduce transmission of floor vibrations to the neighbors below. Now I'm looking for isolation feet to replace those gorgeous black chrome spikes 'cause they punch right into the cement stone under the sub's 55 pound weight.

There are a several comments in these forums about VibraPods, but $80 for a set of 4 seems to me just a bit over the top. Has anyone come across QuietFeet? Their size and construction appear to be almost identical to VibraPods, but at a quarter of the price.

Nebber mine . . . Just came across another QuietFeet review, one that made me step back and think twice about using these things.

According to that one, both a DVD player and a Home Theater PC mounted on these things tended to move / shimmy after installation of the pads. That probably confirms their vibration absorptive qualities, but it also indicates they are not a stable coupling device for something like a subwoofer.

Today, I located some dense rubber tips that perfectly matched the diameter of the black chrome feet. They even had a nib, or prong, that fit right into the treaded holes left empty after removing the sharp spike tips. They protect that black chrome from abrasion while firmly coupling the sub to the cement slab.

Now I gotta hear what it sounds like, and hope the NAF improves!

The only thing that occured to me after first looking at the specs was how much weight each foot could take. This seems to be cost effective in an inversely proportional relationship to the weight of the object. A 55 pound sub MIGHT not be a problem but there are certainly subs out there that weigh 2-4 times that much.

Absolutely correct! Mine is at the upper weight limit of the largest pad. Anything heavier would be asking for trouble.

On the other hand, I would hope that a 100-200 lb sub would only be used in a single-family home anyway. In that case, floor vibration / NAF wouldn't be as critical an issue and this sort of pad wouldn't be necessary.

Just my opinion, but the cheapest and most effective way to isolate vibrations on a big heavy sub would be to purchase 4 hockey pucks and set the sub's corners on them.

Just my opinion, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a better way to contain almost all vibrations produced within the sub and keep them from resonating into the floor.

No chance of the sub shifting on the pucks either.
