Default are the RTi12's an upgrade from the RT1000 series?

I currently have the RT1000 series speakers, bought about 7 years ago. They work very good, but I have an opportunity to pick up a brand new pair of RTi12's at a good price.

Is the RTi12 a significantly better speaker? I am concerned that losing the sub on the RT1000(while it is small, and I have a main sub anyway) will feel like I am losing part of the sound.

    any opinions?

If you have sufficient amp power, the 12's will outperform the 1000's in all respects. I would feed each one no less than 200-300 watts of high current external amp power.

I am using an Onkyo 901 Receiver to drive them. How do you think that would push the RTi12's?

    Not. Go with external amps.

Until I get the buckaroos to get an amp (I just bought the 901 this week), should I still take advantage of the deal on the rti12s since it sounds like they are definitely an upgrade.

by the way, what is a good value on an amp?

Yes, buy them now, sell the 1000's, and get a better amp later. Just don't push them too hard with the Oink or you will fry a tweeter from clipping.

Good amps? Plenty of advice around here: Adcom, Parasound, Outlaw, NAD, B&K, Rotel.

You could bi amp them with outlaw monoblocks and the 901, that should generate about 300 watts going into the rti 12's. It's just a thought, but outlaws stuff seems to be pretty good from everythign I've read and the two amps together would set you back about 600 bucks... or exactly six hundred bucks. Otherwise you could always look around for a good preowned nad, rotel, carver, outlaw... etc, save some money, and it's not like a dated amp will really be any worse than a new one.
