If you have your 950 set up to play dolby digital and you put a dvd in and go to options. Does it make a diff. if you choose the dts or dolby format from the dvd options. If it makes a diff., what is it?

Basically, I have the dolby format chosen for my 950 and the dolby format on the actual dvd is not chosen. What happens? Does it still play on dolby digital format even when I don't choose it on the dvd?

I don't have the 950 (yet), so my response may mean nothing to you, but most receivers/controllers ask you to assign a particular digital input to your source unit, like in DVD mode, you choose COAX 1 for the input. I'm not sure how Outlaw does it, or what you mean by choosing DD. If your standard digital surround is set to Dolby Digital, it should not matter. You must always use the DVD menu to select either DD or DTS, or rifle through the different audio tracks with your DVD remote if the DVD allows. Either way, the processor should automatically switch to DD or DTS based on what it is being fed through the assigned digital input. In other words, use the DVD to select the audio track, and the 950 should follow suit automatically. If it is not, I would think that it is not set up right. Again, however, my experience is limited to receivers.

i think dts is better. To my understanding dts is the same as dolby but fully digital. Another thing is that dts can use 7.1 (dts es). And that is spectacular

Both Dolby Digital and DTS are "fully digital". They're just different ways of encoding the sound to and from digital.

And for the record, DTS ES is not a 7.1 format. The discrete variant of DTS ES is 6.1, and 7.1 systems play the same center surround information through both back surrounds to provide a wider rear soundstage and prevent perceived reversal (i.e. when sounds from directly behind you can sound like they're actually in front of you). However, even DTS ES Discrete is not truly discrete, since center surround information is subtracted from the left and right surrounds.

i think by default... a lot of DVD players and receivers will play the DD track. sometimes though, it willl play the 2.0 stereo mix instead.
