7.1 with 5.1 media

What happens when you play a 5.1 encoded disc in a 7.1 setup? Are the rear centers dead or the same as the surround speakers? Or is it optional depending on your receiver/pre's settings.

Assume B&K equipment if it is manufacture dependent.

Yep, at least on my preamp. I can select either 5.1 or use the various DSP modes to send a signal to the rear speakers.
