    Default plumbing help

recently my wife and I have noticed that in the evenings our main bathroom toilet has gas.....it bubbles big time (kinda like passing wind in a bath...don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about) and most of the water in the bowl is gone. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this and how to stop it ?\

    thanks

Check your vents! Also, do you have enough fresh air entering the bathroom when your vent fan is on? Could be pulling air from the waste pipe vents into the room. It would usually pull from the open tub drain, or the sink drain, not sure how it would get enough suction to pull through the toilet?

    Willow,

It's the upstairs neighbor's fish again - trying to infiltrate your place. Run like hell!!

All waste water drains require venting, either via a vent stack through the roof or a mechanical vacuum breaker, or they'll chug, fart, drain slow, etc. I can't imagine the toilet would be on a vacuum breaker, but I'm not familiar with Canadian plumbing code. More likely:

    1. Your vent stack to the toilet is "wet vented" - i.e. tied into a common stack BELOW the point of another drain (poor mechanical design and/or craftsmanship, but done all too frequently). A drain in a unit above a wet vented stack can cause siphonage in the system below it when large volumes of water are released quickly (draining a bath tub, washing machine); or

    2. Your vent stack is obstructed. Common causes: frost build-up in the pipe above roof level, bird nest, water column.

You didn't reference any other drainage issues (slow draining sink, shower, etc), but if you are also experiencing this there is probably a column of water standing in the vent stack due to an obstruction (not a total blockage) in the sewer line. If not, your stack is obstructed above you from one of the causes listed.
