Question Difference between single and dual coil

    Hi everybody!

What is the difference between a subwoofer of one coil or those with two coils? My brother is donating me an amplifier with five channels. In the car audio forum recommend me to buy a sub with two coils. If my amp has only one channel available a double coiled subwoofer could be used? If so how can I connect it? If I connect only one coil of a double coiled subwoofer, the sw could be damaged?

    Best regards :)

yes, you can have a dvc sub on a 1 channel amp
as far as wiring goes...it depends on the sub and the amp

DVC allows more ways to hook up your sub. Parallel, series, resistance loaded, dual coil or single coil. All offer their different results, but no SVC woofer by itself can offer this many options.

It simply makes it easier to find hookup options that will best match your amplifier when you have chosen a single driver as your sub.

bit of translation for what dennis said - you can wire the coils in parallel or serial, or you can short one out with a resistor (good way to change the effective q of the driver, see this pdf from adire). you can also drive only one coil, or you can push both separately (despite what you may have heard, this won't hurt the sub).

I know tweeter isn't the most reliable source of info but they told me it would be better If I bought the DVC instead of the SVC for the MM2124. They said the DVC would handle the power better. I have 2 MM2124 SVC and two JL 500/1. Is it true that DVC handles power better?

Yes. Take the MM2124. It handles 400 rms. Thats 400 watts per coil. The DVC MM2124 handles 400 per coil. And since the JL amps puts out 500 at 1-4 ohms it would split the power to 250 per coil so in this remote case, the Tweeter guy is actually right!

yes sorry circuit city only carries SVC. I think when tweeter picked them up they demanded it be DVC so they sell those now. Not sure if thats true though.

Yup, Circuit City is no longer a viable player in the car audio community as far as Im concerned. That pisses me off too cause Ive been buying gear from there for about 15 years!! From Alpine V12's to Verge.
