Angry 2nd Onkyo receiver that malfunc on me

Does anyone have any problems with the Onkyo TX-SR601? I thought I got a good deal from Ecost.com for $279 in Aug. The first unit did not make any sound on arrival, tuner did not locked on any station at all. Returned it for another. The 2nd unit worked for almost 2 months and now does the same thing, nothing from the speakers except some popping noise as I switch modes, tunner does not indicate that it has locked on to a station. Tried the speaker calibration procedure to see if I could get a pink noise signal, nothing just silence. This is fustrating and disappointing. I'll have to take it in for service. Kinda wished I had gone for a diff brand.

Guess you should've bought from an authorized company... then they could've swapped it out over the counter instead of dealing with all that shipping. Just a tip for next time... sorry to hear about your problems though. I had great luck with the 601.

Ecost.com is an Onkyo authorized dealer, but it was past the 30 days period. I dropped it off for service under warranty at a place about 1 mile from my house. Yes, I could have saved some time, had I bought it from Circuit City but if it dies 6 months latter, I'm not sure they'll swap it.

Isn't Onkyo's warranty for refurbished electronics being 1 year (instead of 2 years for new items)?

As long as your receiver is still under the Onkyo warranty, you can purchase extended warranties directly from Onkyo's website. These are no-deductible parts and labor warranties for about $30.00 that get added on to your existing warranty. Not third-party warranties neither, these are directly from Onkyo. You may want to look into it. It's cheap insurance.

The units I got from Ecost.com are new units. With the full 2 years labor/parts warranty. I was leary at the low price, thinking that they tried to pawn off refurbished units as new. But everything indicated that they are new units.

Sorry, I was thinking Ecost.com is an authorized dealer for Onkyo's refurbished goods only.

They do have a lot of refurbished stuff on their website. And the price was right around what Onkyo charges for a refurbished unit too. I made sure that the description said new.

Default Update on my Onkyo receiver

Well got it back from service for two weeks now. Seemed to function OK. They told me it was cracked solder joints. I guessed it was the punishment it took from being shipped UPS ground for a week. I noticed that the manual was taped to the bag covering the unit had torn loose. Ripping the bag covering the receiver in both of the units that I got. I guessed the lesson is upgrade the shipping so it would not take such a punishment over a long time.

Well, I avoided Onkyo (and Harmon Kardon, JVC, Sony, Kenwood,...) because it was my opinion that they were of lesser quality. However, it sounds like your problem was either caused during shipping or was just some bizarre problem at the plant.

Hope it keeps working for ya!
