Default Dodd Audio ELP - Tube Pre-amp

Dodd Audio - Entry Level Tube Pre-Amp - 9/10 *SOLD*

I hesitate to move this piece, but you must move gear to get gear in my book. I want to go back to a single chassis tube pre-amp with remote and headphone amplifier output.

This pre-amp is very simple in design, but will crush tube pre-amps 3 times it's price, I guarantee it. It sounds much better than my previous Anthem Pre-2L. The soundstage is wider and deeper, and more defined....the Anthem didn't stand a chance. A very inviting pre-amp if there ever was one.

Hand built by Gary Dodd of Dodd Audio using all Cardas jacks and wiring, and not a single inexpensive component to be found anywhere. How he does this at his prices is beyond me.

Here is the lowdown from Dodd:

ELP

Includes: Original box, double box, original power cable AND a SC Magic Power(3Ft.) power cable.

SCMP

Price is firm and fair as the unit is just as it was when it came out of the box. <200 hours on the stock Amperex(Holland) 6DJ8 tubes.

If you wanted a tube pre-amp, THIS should be your first stop. Stop crying, and start buying.

I might keep it, just as a spare, but my needs outweigh the pre-amp at this time.

The Dodd ELP will best any line stage out there under $1200 or so, maybe more.

Beardog - I received your PM. I can't comment specifically on the aforementioned pre-amps because I haven't personally heard them. I will however say that it is the best tube pre-amp I have heard to date, and I've heard quite a few others. You will not be disappointed.

I'll answer you formally a little later, gotta do a couple things right at the moment. I will consider it SOLD, thanks much for picking it up.

I gotta say thanks to you , and all you guys for being so patient and helpful , with me..

I am getting my first real start on a system that is not a
"all-in-one" average quality set up from the store for the masses.

It may not be the best out there,
but it`s better than what I have,

and you guys have been a big help...

THANKS

Beardog, read me, and read me loud and clear. This one stay's in 'the family'. You just bagged a world class, hand made, tube line stage. Now, get to work on the rest of your rig, cause the preamp stage is officially DONE.

Cheers,
Russ

You have cool speakers, start researching a hardcore SS 2CH amplifier. You have a tube pre-amp, or will soon, don't worry about tubes in the amp stage.

Any suggestions amp wise ?

Would a tube cd player be a good choice, or would it conflict too much with the pre`s tubes ?

The yamaha I have been using is pretty noisy..

Don't worry about a tube CDP either, worry about that nonsense later....when you have nothing else to do.

Man, the list is endless for this question.....run on the Audiogon for some potentials. I think a Parasound HCA-3500 would complement that tube pre-amp. I know how Parasound runs with tubes, that's why it's my first suggestion.....it doesn't mean there aren't others.

Parasound is really heavy and tight in the bass region but lacking in the high end.....tube reproduction typically lacks a little bass, but depending on the tube, can be tailored for high end....get what I'm saying?

Who's in Laurel, MD?

FWIW and IMO, a tube cd player is a good idea in any rig.

F1 - What do you know about tubes at all, to say a tube CDP is beneficial? It's flavor of the month, and if you had a tube pre-amp stage, that you could actually roll tubes in, you would not even be thinking tube CDP.

The comment is meant in jest, but seriously, get something you can roll before you recommend tube gear.

What are you talking about, I have a tube sacd/cd player already. Maybe you should try one. BTW, I'm quite happy with the tubes in the pre section. :D

Why on earth would I even NEED a tube CDP? Are you going to educate me on why I need tubes?

You should try some Mullards or Brimars in your gear, oh wait, you can't, it's the milspec type.....nevermind.

The point is how can you say X when you have limited experience with tubes in the first place. I'm no tube monger myself, but have owned a couple tube pre-amps, and rolled about 20 different tubes.

Tube CDP? Great, it warms up the output stage, just like it would in the pre-amp stage, what a concept.

A tube CDP makes the MOST sense in a non-tube rig, and I agree, you will benefit like a mofo. A 100% tube rig? or just a tube CDP and a tube Pre.....whats the point?

Hey, it's just my opinion, but don't expect to see anything tube related in the CDP arena in this house, ever.
