1st generation SDA-II's

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and think it's great.

I have a pair of SDA-II speakers made in 9/83 that I purchased in 84. They have the SL1000 tweeters which I am currently upgrading to the RD0194-1's.
I have been driving this pair all these years with a Hafler DH-500.

Questons;
Does anyone in the forum own/owned this early model?
If so, anyone done any crossover upgrade work?
Anyone have a schematic?

Welcome to the forum. Mayo......near Annapolis, right?

I'm not aware of any forum members upgrading that crossover, maybe you can be the first. If you contact Ken Swauger at Polk he will send you a schematic.

I've got a copy of the SDA II crossover schematic, dated 11/26/84, with two revisions:

3.5 ohm resistor changed to 4 ohm on both boards and fuse replaced by polyswitch on both boards. Here are the upgradable parts (per cabinet):

Resistors

2 - 4.0 ohm 5 watt
2 - 2.7 ohm 5 watt

Capacitors

3 - 750 pF silver mica
1 - 0.5 uF mylar
2 - 12 uF mylar
2 - 27 uF electrolytic

Polyswitch

2 - RDE030A

I have this model with the sl2000 tweeters and the sound is very addictive. I have considerd cap upgrades but Polk got it pretty much right as mylar and silver mica caps don't degrade much over time. There are two electrolytic caps in the system but the are parallel(sp) and not in series with the mid-bass drivers and have less of an effect on sound quality. If you go for the upgrades
please report back and tell us how it worked out.

Interesting post since there no record I can find of the SDA 2 using the SL1000, although its contemporary, the SDA 1, is shown to have used the 1000.

LOL... yup, the good old days of Polk production when all the speakers had a certain, distintive odor...

One side note... comment has been made about the SDA tweeter, dropped from all subsequent models, and it's "spacey" image impact. I wonder if it can simply be disconnected....

Yes, it can be disconnected.
