Default Now that it's gone..... do you miss it? Or did you even know?

Just a question since most of you are American. How many of you miss NHL hockey this year? How many even knew they weren't playing? And how many don't even know what I'm talking about?

This is major news up here in Canada, but now that it's gone (or will be very soon). I'm wondering what the American reaction is.

I knew they were on strike but I dont really miss it.

I watched it occasionally but never got into it like I do NFL.

Personally tho, I lose interest when a bunch of multi millionares go on strike.

not sure who's side to take, the player or the owners?

The players have a legit complaint...

If my boss came to me and said they were cutting my pay by half, I'd be pissed...

but then again, I don't make millions...

    Darque Knight,

I don't think they'll all end up in jail training with the masters. I know for a fact the NBA and the NFL have a few openings.

The Bosox beating the scumbag, jack-booted, Nazi, New York Yankees in the series, was the best thing to occur in pro sports since 1955, when the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the scumbag, jack-booted, Nazi, New York Yankees in that series.

I miss hockey a LOT! Especially playoff hockey, it's fantastic! FWIW, the players aren't on strike, the owners have locked them out. Basically the owners can't control their spending so they want to put in a salary cap. The players have agreed to more or less cut their pay in half and accepted a luxury tax, but the owners are being bitches still. I'm sure another league will form soon.

I, for one, miss it because it cut into my income.

What most people don't realize is that a lock-out like this affects more than just the fans. Even though mine is just a P/T income, there are people that work in the facilities (I work as a security guard at CAA, home of the Devils & Nets) that have had their income literally cut in half. Not only are there no hockey games on the days set aside for the NHL schedule, but the facilities are not allowed to schedule other events on those nights to compensate because the days need to be left open in case of a settlement. Therefore, people who normally work 4-5 nights a week during basketball & hockey season now are limited to 1 or 2.

So who really loses out on a strike/lock-out? It's the poor working stiff who is trying to make an extra buck/earn a living. I'm sure that players & owners can still support their families but some poor laborer who maintains the ice or cleans-up the seating area after the event gets his income reduced through no fault of his own.
Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Just to correct you. The players have offered up a 24% rollback on wages (very generous) but want no tie on wages to revenues which is what the owners are looking for. The players know that if they they take a 1 time hit on wages there are some owners who will still overspend as there markets allow it (Toronto and New York being the 2 worst). The other players can then use these new high priced contracts in arrbitration to quickly ratchet up the average wage and we're back where we started in 2 years or so. Combine that with the fact that hockey draws lower ratings than poker on ESPN but the players still want to be paid like NFL and NBA players. The owners really don't have a lot of choice but to try and get some linkage between revenues and wages. The number they are after is 55% of revenues to player wages. With revenues around 2 billion thatis 1.1 billion to split between approx. 700 players. I know this is over simplified but it is close to accurate. They have also to agreed to profit share with the players any money over $120 million in profit 50/50 (basically 3 million per team). So if the players feel the league is healthy and has a good product then they should be willing to accept this offer.

I could care less if it's not on. I can tell you that our JR. team here is getting alot more attention and the games are just as if not more enjoyable, why cause they are trying to make it once made it's like they don't care.
