I've owned a bunch of Rotel vintage gear and it's cool, but I haven't bought many pieces since owning them originally. The new gear really threw me for a loop, as I really liked the aesthetics and the simplicity of the interface. This is in regards to the RSP-1066...and it's siblings.
They're internally conservative but externally impressive. There is nothing internal that isn't done in the same price bracket but it's miles above generic gear in regards to layout and build quality.
Blah, blah...here's some guts and ass!

Just a note to folks after this, <cough> Marker <cough>....downsize your pics so they don't blow the page open. 800x600 works perfectly, multiples are even better.

Are those premium nichicon gold caps I spot on that borad? Were those stock (hard to believe), or did you have that spinner modded?Originally Posted by Mike682

I have to check the caps but the unit is all stock, I just popped the top and snapped away...Originally Posted by mulveling

Not a bad amp, but the insides don't give you the warm fuzzy feeling of value. Not much to look at. Can't cost more than a few bucks to make. Electrolytic caps are all generic dime a dozen variety.
Edit: The internal cabling is by Monster, lol :p

Extravagant headphone amplifier. Now here's some quality guts. Nichicon fine golds and muse caps abound, robust power section, heavy duty PCB with very WIDE copper traces (the PCB is actually light green - it looks orange because that's from all the copper inside it!), gigantic heatsink for the output transistors, no opamps in the signal path (all discrete design). Of course who can resist the bling of gold knobs and Japanese Echizen laquered Asada wood on the front panel? Obviously not the burglars who broke into my apartment a few months ago :p

Wow! That's really impressive for consumer gear. Usually only see those kind of caps in high end stuff. I guess Panny is a company that occassionally considers quality instead of just how to save a buck.Originally Posted by Mike682

One of my first receivers, a Pioneer VSX-4400, made around 1989-1990. Dolby Pro Logic, etc. Rated at 100W x 2 fronts and I think 15W x 2 for the rears.

Now here's a pretty... insides. I've just had the privilege of re-capping a beautiful Marantz 8B tube stereo power amp. While my work wasn't quite up to the original factory standards, it was an enjoyable experience to get to poke around inside this beautifully designed and built amplifier. Sounds good, too.
Here's the "before" shot:
Here's the "after" version
Sorry for the difference in image size/quality. Two different cameras :-)
EDIT: Also sorry that the latter image is flipped 180 degrees from the former. I had it oriented the other way up yesterday when I finished up the re-cap.
