JL 500/1 and MM2124

Ok well I know I'm giving it too much power. I have blown 3 of these MM2124 with the song Nod Your Head by will smith with my volume at 10 I have a pioneer DEH-P8600MP. I have the circuit city warranty and I just found out theyre gonna pick up polk again. Does anyone know if this new line of Polks will be able to handle more power than the RMS better than last years? Anyone seen the 2005 line yet? I want to keep with POLKs but I've gone through a few so I'm not to confident in them and might get another pair of subs. I really do keep the JL 500/1 down and dont push it.

Yep, youre overpowering them by about 100 watts.

Polk has recently come out with dual voice coil models and the MM2124DVC will handle 400 per coil for a total of 800 RMS. The JL amp puts out 500 (600 real world) watts at 1-4 ohms so that would be a great match. Stick with Polk.

we get DEI in a few weeks.

kicker may be the end of next month I think.

We will have all kicker lines available. some of them in store... and some online only.

kicker comp's probably - the crappiest kicker you can get.


bud - just turn down the gain on the amp - yes the JL regulated 500/1 has a gain...

you're not really killing the sub - its only 100w over... most likely your bass setting or EQ setting is too high for the bass portion and you've probably also got your loudness button on and you're bass EQ on the amp dialed up (or any combination of that).

More like 200 over. JL is as bad as MTX in underrating their amps. Last test I saw on the 500/1 in a magazine, it put out 600.

if that's the case then it does not have a regulated output stage (which it does)... think about it.

not necessarily... what if the output stage just limits 'below 4 ohms' power to whatever the amp's usual 4-ohms power is?

heck, the 'regulation' could just be a variable resistor that is set automagically so the net impedance is 4 ohms.

i know that's probably not it, but what if the output regulator was intentionally set at the factory for what the amp is actually capable of pushing? just a couple ideas...

It has nothing to do with voltage regulation. It could put out 1000 watts at all voltages and loads and JL still chooses to rate it at 500. JL Audio, MTX, Crossfire and a bunch other just rate their amps way on the conservative side.

Now now. Ill put their amps up against anybody's. Their speakers too. The XR comps are awesome!! Ive not heard the ZR's yet tho.

Their subs run the gambit from the cheap W0's to the standard setting W7. The W6 and W7 are among the best subs in the world.
