Default Computer Speakers - What to buy?

So what's the best thing I can do for computer speakers?

    My budget is $200.

I don't really need 5.1 or anything, just looking for two front speakers with a sub. A sub is a must though because I need a decent amount of bass.

I've been down the Klipsch Promedia route and that didn't work out too well for me. I heard a pair of Logitech speakers at CC, but sitting next to the Klipsch, it sounded like someone threw a blanket over them.

Didn't Polk make some computer speakers a while back...why do I have a feeling that those probably suck?

    Any thoughts out there...

I've heard great things about the Swans M200. No sub though, but might be worth checking out.

As this is a polk forum:

    R15 - $50 at www.outpost.com
PSW202 - offer $50 for a used one in the flea market (there are probably still some people looking to unload one).
    $100 for a stereo receiver at www.jr.com or where-ever

If you ever been to Onkyo's online shopping, you can get their 50wpc TX8211 receiver refurbished for $80 shipped. Just join 'Club Onkyo' and you get 10 club points for joining, which gives you $10 off purchase. Find the 'factory recondition' section and buy it. Free shipping, no tax (at least in GA) That's probably about the most inexpensive, good quality reciever you can find, with a warranty at least. The 100wpc TX8511 is $149 shipped if you want more power, but for a pc, I doubt you will.

Lemme just state that these would be an add your own sub deal...

    These Wharfdale's look cool-
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...162-019&depa=1

and I really like the look of these swans, I just wish I could justify laying down the extra cash to test 'em out-

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...136-102&depa=1

Wharfdale also makes THE most expensive 2.0 computer speakers that Newegg sells-

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...162-001&depa=1

    Unfortunately, they're wired with M0|\|$73R

My own favorite is a pair of R15's with a decent receiver/amp. They leave me with no desire to hook up a subwoofer at all! But, if I wanted to, I have the preamp outs on my receiver (actually, Russ' receiver) that would do just fine for that.

But really, I absolutely love the R15's. Unfortunately, you can't get a pair for $50 anymore. The cheapest outpost has them is $50/speaker in black. And I really like the Cherry finish, too.
    Ludicrous gibs!

    nadams,
the Swans are the same that I mentioned above. Both sets of Warfdales are passive speakers designed more for HT. He will need an amp/reciever. If that's the case, he can find much better deals on bookshelfs. The Mission M70 is a great deal for $95-pair+shipping at the Stereo Trading Outlet (www.tsto.com)

Okay, didn't notice that about the Wharfdales, either. Those Swans do look interesting, don't they?

    I've thought about going the R15 route, and if I could still get them for $50 a pair, I would...but I can't...

Those Vons that Russ pointed out look good, but only go down to 70 hz...what's that all about? I wonder if they have the capability to add a supplimental sub to the mix? I doubt it...but that would basically sell them for me...

I like the Warfdales, but if I'm gonna go that route then I'd likely just go with some Polks.

The Swans look nice also, but it doesn't look like I'd have the ability to add a sub to the mix :(

Thanks for the suggestions so far

I'm gonna second Russ's suggestion. I started looking for those speakers locally and no one had them. Then I was at another manager's office and she had that same set on her credenza! I was like "Whoa! I've been looking for these!" So she gave me a quick demo and they are VERY nice and even better looking in person than those pictures!

Yeah, those Vons do look nice for the price. 30day money back too. Try em out and let us know.

Anyone know if there is a place you can get the new Wharfdale Diamond 9 series online?

Wow.......I had totally forgotten that my first whole HT type setup was a Mission setup, which I blew a bunch of money on and ended up returning because I felt I overextended myself on that type of purchase (back when I was 20 I think). I do remember their stuff sounding great though, and for $100 that can't be a bad thing

Just so you guys know, when outpost has the R15s on sale for 50 bucks, that is indeed for a pair of them, even though it seems like its only one. I know because I ordered and received a pair last week!

    cheezman,

The cherry R15's are sold as a pair, but it seems the black is a single speaker only. My brother called them and they said that the black ones were per speaker.

The R15s come packed one pair per box. So unless they are cutting the box in half, you will probably get a pair.

I guess you're right. Polk has them listed on the site as being sold per pair. Outpost just must not know what they're talking about.
