Default wierd new yamaha speaker... the YSP1

I found this new speaker from yamaha... It uses 42 drivers each driven by seperate digital amplifiers to create "surrround sound" from one speaker. Forty 1-5/8" speakers and two 4-3/8" speakers. A neat use of small efficient digital amps.... nice waf too :p

The current issue of "What Hi-Fi" is giving this speaker a very high rating.

Yea I'd like to listen to it and see what it's like because I've never listened such a unique speaker before...

    aparently it's pretty pricy though, I heard numbers around $1500 - $2000?

When something like that gets a high rating on anything other than a massive center channel...

    We must then ask ourselves...

Here is another review. You can be skeptical, and I am as well, but maybe it is good.

Edit: So it's also a pre/pro, but will need a powered sub for bass.

I've heard it!. While It does not compare too a full surround system...It does blow the Bose far apart. The system is extremely functional. Even the sales guy admits its for a small room...Lots of bells and whitles for adjustments to get it to sound right though....not just a bunch of speakers...has a lot of processing power behind it.
    Peace sells, but who's buying?

I have been trained on this and found it to have a great purpose.

I wanna explain something, most of you guys are audio snobs. Yes I said it snobs. You turn you nose at whatever isn't in your class.... I'm not far away from being the same way but I do see where OTHER kinds of audio products fit a bill thats needed.

This speaker/system is designed for people who want a surround experience in a small room where running wires are not possible hidden. Unlike alot of you who have so much exposed wire, most people don't wanna see any wire anywhere. Like the Bose 3 2 1 system, you get a pretty decent sounding surround experience from this. I heard it and felt it was on the bright side but it has a Digital EQ so you can tailor it to your room. It has many setting and functions.

For a bedroom system, it's the bomb. remember it's not suppost to compete with a full blown surround system, but can simulate surround by reflection. You Actually measure your room and find it's reflection points and calibrate the system to work in that given room. How many of you have took the time to properly calibrate the angles of your surround system???? HuH??? How many???

Put your ball sacks back in your pants and allow yourself to have a open mind. Is it so hard to figure out that these kind of products where designed for peoples needs? Maybe not yours and mine, but so many people love this thing. Like Bose, they love it to death.

I just went back to tweak a system that had a Bose Lifestyle system and talking to my customers, they couldn't be happier. They completely love the flexability of the Bose and find no flaws in it. Unlike like us Audio snobs.

Pioneer developed that a year or two ago, they clearly stated that it would need to be augmented by a subwoofer.

Chill out, Dan... Just said it was fugly naked.

I've no issue whatsoever with the concept or its target audience.

Dan, there's just no defense of Bose. They make a lousy, overpriced product. There are other, superior products that fit that nitch.

I haven't heard it yet, but it is a great concept for people that want surround sound but can't/won't run wires to the rear of the room. It is also wall-mountable and fit great under 42-inch plasmas. It needs to be in a traditional four-walled room too, since it is using reflections for the surround part. There was a guy over on AVS raving about it. He has a high dollar 2-channel setup, but was considering it for his home theater. In the demo he heard, the surround effects really seemed like they were coming from discrete speakers.

No problemo... psychoacoustic surround systems have their place.

KEF now has a 2 speaker "surround" set up as well.

There's definitely a market for them. When the Bose 321 came out, it was the number one selling one-box home theater for the year. And it competely sucked for sound quality, believe me.

It kind of looks like a 40 eyed spider...

I wouldn't invest that kind of money into one but it is kind of cool and does have the market of someone wanting fancy sound without wires or multiple speakers and being decorator friendly.

I think it's kind of an asumption that for some bass you'd need a sub since 1-5/8" speakers and 4-3/8" speakers don't exactly torque out the bass... maybe they will have a ysp2 or something that has a sub or two built into the back?
