    Default Adcom service?

    Background:

I got a good deal on a gtp-400 pre-amp. It works pretty well except the volume pot seems to be bent or screwed up or something. Basiclly it hangs in a couple of spots. It can also be a little fuzzy. I knew all of this going in but figured I would use it untill I could get something better.

    Question:

So has anyone ever had anything serviced by Adcom? Was is very expensive or was it reasonably priced? I would like to send it to them(or someone else) and have the volume knob fixed and have the thing gone through to fix anything else that is looming. But if it is going to cost more than it's worth....

Also if anyone knows of a place other than Adcom that will work on Adcoms for a reasonable price, please let me know. The close to central Florida te better.

    Thanks,
    Todd

I called Adcom, they said they do not service their equipment, I would need to send it to an authorized service center. They suggested Electronic Laboratories in Pompano beach. They are closed, so I will have to call them tommorrow. I will say that the lady at Adcom was very nice.

I always look for local service for electonics myself. It's saves on shipping, with could end is damage to the gear. plus if there is any problems... all you have to do is drive there and settle things in person.. instead of on the phone. or emails.

I know local service on some of the many brands of gear out there isn't always possible. but even if you have to ship it... ship it close to home. just a thought.

    good luck.

Ok this might come off sounding really stupid but I am new to this stuff so pardon my complete and total ignorance.

When I got the afore mentioned Adcom today I grabed it from the box and sat it on the first thing I could find, which happened to be a polk monitor 4 speaker. I tried it out and that is when I found the problems I described before. Scratchyness, channels coming and going with scratchyness, etc...Since then I have put the adcom on a more stable and supportive stand and the problems seem to have gone away. I still have a little scratchyness when adjusting things, volume, source, etc. But while it is just sitting there playing I am getting no problems. Could my problems have come from the unit not being supported properly?

    Thanks,
    Todd

ummmm. i dont' think so. maybe something inside is lose. and just barely making contact. the scratchiness is from dirty knobs.. internally. Lots of gear over time has scratch knobs.. that click, pop, hiss, static.. it needs a good cleaning and lube. LOF if you will. That should take care of some of the problems.

Adcom will look at it- they tell you to send it to your local dealer, but if you call back and say that the local guy is an a**h*** or that they won't look at it if you didn't buy it there, etc, they'll take it. I think they charge $120 just to look at it, but that will go against the cost of any subsequent repairs.

I had a 585 fry on me and they were awesome- said it would take 2 weeks, then called em back the next day to say that they'd already shipped it. They also sold me $60 retail rackmounts for $20, I think...

BTW, this was about a year ago, so they might have changed since.

Scottsdale, AZ... at least that's where I had to ship it. BTW, for amps, Fedex ground is WAY cheaper- not sure if that's a function of UPS screwing you on the size/ weight ratio, but it was about $20 less w/ fedex.

Oh I forgot to mention: For that $120 they charge, they also clean it up & tighten anything that's come loose- so if it's something minor, the $120 will cover it.
