Default Voom crashes bites the dust

Read today that Voom is calling it quits. I was suprised to see them say the Voom service only had 26,000 customers. Seems the Chairman and the CEO who are father and son could not agree on the service which led to its ultimate demise.

In the Southeast I have been seeing Voom commercials regularly and would of thought they were doing OK. I am sorry to see them go as I felt they were pushing Direct and Dish toward more HD service. Seems they will cease service in 30 days.

    where's johnny_utah at?

Several of my friends signed up for Voom and I told every one of them that I didn't think the service would last very long. Looks like I was right and a big 'I told you so!" is in order.

I like the theory of what they were trying to do, but didn't agree with how they were going about doing it...

They were good for the market though, pushing others to provide HD content, but I believe they've served their purpose...

i also think they were slightly ahead of their time. still not that many people have HDTV's.

once the analog signals are gone from the airwaves.. i think people will once again be looking for HDTV programming. that in my opinion will be the right time for VOOM.

it's to bad it's closing down.

Yeah I've been telling people this for quite some time that they wouldn't last... Sucks for those 26,000 people.

this morning before lunch, I went to Voom site, to check out what's going on, and it seems business as usual. Just now, I went back, and the site is Voomish...nada...close for business!

It reminded me of DirecTV DSL that went belly up a couple of years ago. I was one of the subscribers who got pushed out to Verizon, which turned out to be a good experience, after all. The transition was orderly, with plenty of handholding process to make sure that service goes uninterrupted.

I have a strong hunch that is not the case here.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

When looking for alternatives to Comcast, I looked at Voom momentarily... until I saw the startup costs. For a 3 room setup, it was going to reach about $1000!!!! And I'm fairly sure you don't own the equipment (but I could be completely wrong on that statement).

I can't wait to hear the bitching after the Sprint Nextel deal is complete. I have suggested that all voice customers get rolled to cdma and allow the iden ptt customers alone (just absorb the extra ptt network in other words).

Yea, that offer was around shortly after my satellite TV search. Guess it was a last ditch effort.

    Default I hate Sprint

I hate Sprint! I know that'll piss some people off...

I live in Frisco, about 30 minutes north of Dallas, and I can absolutely NOT get a signal here. I've tried every phone in their line up...I cannot get a signal out here.

Maybe that will change when they merge with Nextel, but it's too late now.

I have Cingular now and have full signal strength at all times...anywhere I go...

Thing is, Sprint offers some really cool services and stuff, and I think they're ahead of the group in terms of all the extra features and gadgets they offer, but the most basic thing, cell phone service, simply sucks around here.

I have several friends around the DFW area that also have Sprint, and their service isn't as bad as mine was, but they still get a bunch of dropped calls...

I've heard the whole rundown of how CDMA is better than GSM and all that...guess that theory just doesn't apply in the DFW area.

That was early on. Since late last year, the upfront costs have been minimal. I've had Voom for a few months now and enjoy it very much. It cost me $1 to have it installed (just like a lot of the new customer promo offers that Dish and DirecTV offer). I still have my Dish active and will simply switch over if and when Voom goes dark.

Voom was marketed extremely poorly. Many people don't realize that Voom isn't *just* those HD channels, that you can get all your regular stuff too. Too many people thought "If I get Voom, I won't have Nickleodeon, Disney, etc.".

    Great product. ****ty marketing.

Dish bought the Voom satellite. Voom (if it continues) will be using leased satellite space.

Dish Network is adding 10 of the Voom HD channels in May, with the other 11 of Voom's 21 exclusive to be added by 2006.

    PM - You were right.

Dish is offering a sweet deal to Voom customers though. You can get the 942 HD DVR for $250, with 6mo of free HD programming - which - includes the 10 Voom Channels mentioned earlier. You might tell your firends about it. If they don't want to throw down the $250, they can pick up the 811 (i think thats the model #) for free.

I am sad to see Voom go, but it has been awesome the last year!

edit: also wanted to add it's 46k subscribers.
