DVC sub wiring question

Please unconfuse me. Ok, you see the audiobahn amp I have in my sig. It has the following specs:

50watts RMSX2 @ 4 ohms
100watts RMSX2 @ 2 ohms
200watts RMS bridged ... right now it's bridged for my RF sub

I'm looking to purchase either a MM2084 or a Kicker CompVR CVR8-4. Polk sub is no prob, but I'm confused about the Kicker sub.

The Kicker sub is a 4ohm DVC with 25-200RMS (25-100 per coil). Can I use this sub with my current amp? Does it mean if I wire each coil independently to the amp that I have a combined output of 200watts RMS?

Also, if I independently wire it, I'm assuming that means it will be at 4ohms each coil which won't be compatible with my amp correct?

Last, anyway to wire this sub by leaving my amp bridged?

You can use that sub with your amp but you wont want to.

Since its dual 4 ohm coils you can only hook it up in series as an 8 ohm load which would be about 100 watts to your sub. Or you could hook up a coil to each channel so that would be 50 to each or 100 to the sub total.

Check and see if they have a sub with dual 2 ohm coils. You wire those up in series and voila! Youve got a 4 ohm mono load which will be perfect for your amp.

Thanks Mac, this Kicker sub is out then. I'm just looking at options. Do you know if Kickers are SQ or SPL? I keep reading differing opinions on this line of sub.

combination of both, depending on the model line. Their cheaper subs are more SPL. More you spend, better SQ. Their main customers are SPL-oriented, so that's probably where they focus their efforts though.

True, they are primarily used in SPL circles but they sound very good and I would have no reservations of ever using one for SQ purposes.

Hell I am 99% sure Ill be getting one of their L5 square subs for my system and I plan on competing in SQ competitions. Ive heard these things and think they sound damn good.

You can use this sub with your amp just perfectly. Its dual 2 ohm voice coils so you just wire them in series and youve got a 4 ohm mono load which will match up to your amp just fine.

Ah, didn't know they made that sub, thought they only had the CVR84 not the CVR82. Not that it matters all that much to me (sub behind my seat in truck), but that sure is a nice looking sub too.

Man, I knew this would happen. Have a perfectly decent sounding system now and what do I do? Go out and look for even better stuff :)

Already controlled myself on that one so far. I have a 65" HDTV with a JBL surround system. Good enough for now, especially since my wife says the "waves" coming from the sub makes her motion sick :D

True :D What I should say is for now I'm limiting myself from buying any more home audio stuff (but I sure would love a full-wall overhead projection screen in a dedicated theater room :D )

i dunno, i looked at a 16 thousand dollar projector, and honestly it didn't look any better than a good plasma TV... the only advantage of a projector is the 9 foot wide screen you can get (which is another couple hundred bucks )

Agree. Even if I could afford that much, I have a hard time justifying spending that much on the projector alone. Don't remember the name of the magazine, but every single system in it started around $8K or more and they were calling those the budget systems. Crazy stuff.

Ah, give me a $5000 Pioneer Elite 48" Plasma, some LSi9's, NAD seperates (ya gotta love any audio equipment named after gonads!) and Im all set.

used to...getting much better these days. Still, I'd wait a few more years before shelling out that much dough for a TV with such a relatively short shelf life. Heck my 32" projection tube TV is over 15 years old

Plasma TV's have lifespans of about 20 years!! Same with LCD's.

you do still have to replace the light bulbs tho... and i like the LCDs better, they seem brighter (plus, plasmas can still burn-in). i have a sony flatscreen that's about 10 years old, and it's just begun to go bad... random thoughts...

The Plamsas have the better picture quality mainly in colors. The LCDs do look better in bright light but they tend to have a problem with image lag.

Either way, until their prices come down, WAY DOWN, Ill be sticking with the ole CRT's.
