Default Symbolic Question about the Dark Knight.

Can anyone explain what the screenwriter or the author of TDK intended by the Joker first saying his father cut his face, then later he himself doing it for his wife who was also scarred. Did I miss something? I've been thinking about this off and on for days.

I thought he was tayloring HIS story to whatever situation he used it during.

    Found this on another forum:

Since there are many different theories, i'll list the top 3.

    1) The joker tells two different stories because he has two different scars on his face. One was from his father, the longer, more precise cut from the knife, and it looks to be more like an extended-smile, and the other, from when he cut his mouth for his wife, the shorter more rigid cuts. When he tells the different stories, the camera focuses in on the different sides, possibly hinting the fact that he has two separate sets of scars. Although when he tells the second story about his wife, then it means he already had one scar on his face, which means his wife would had to have loved him enough to marry him with one scar, but not with two???
It doesn't really make sense with his first story.

    2) He tells different stories depending on who he is telling it to in order to intimidate his opponents. When he is about to kill the mobster he tells the story of his dad, a man, and when he is with Rachael he tells the story of his wife, a woman.

    3) He tells different stories because honestly, he doesn't remember (or want to remember) his past. In books, the joker tells different stories for the same reason, demonstrating how crazy he really is. This is what I think the real reason is, since the newer movies follow the books more closely.

The reason I think it's number three is because everyone forgets that towards the way end of the movie the joker is about to tell batman another story about his scars. Assuming this was a different story it would immediately rule out #1 due to the face he has 2 scars, not 3. And it would be highly unlikely that he would want to intimidate batman, because if that was his goal he would have tried a lot sooner. Well, that makes the most sense to me, i hope it helps you. :)

but what i am wondering, is why does he tell people about his scars, when they don't ask about them? I think it only further supports theory #3, showing people how he wants people to know how crazy he is.

I'd go with the crazy theory, #3, that was the impression I got from seeing the movie.

Combo of 2 & 3. He's bat****, and just makes up a story to suit whoever he's talking to.

I also believe it is number 2.... You already know he is crazy without the stories. I believe it was an intimidation thing towards the person he was telling it to.

As for telling batman the story... I don't know.. He never got to tell it so I just throw that one out.

Thats my take on it anyway.

By the way.. This trip to the movies was all I needed as a refresher as to why I don't go to the movies!!

I had an absolute horrible time!! I made a point to go way out in Louisville somewhere to an Imax theater. Thinking the Imax was going to have amazing sound quality's and picture. Boy was I wrong. It was a waste of my time. The theater sound system was one of the worst I've heard. It was so loud and distorted I think at one point my ears begin to hurt. I heard one speaker behind me bottoming out at times making a distinctive pop sound. I wondered to myself if it is always this way in the particular theater I was in. Or if they cranked it up for the "Batman Movie" thinking it was going to make it better. Either way it ruined the experience. The picture was great. But thats about it... I could not wait to get out of there.

Other than that it was a pretty good movie. Its what I expected anyway.. I still don't know if it deserved a trip to the theater. Maybe if the sound system was up to snuff it would have been worth the trip.

Man that sucks. Too bad you didn't hit up the iMax in Indianapolis. The sound was the best part. If I had one complaint, it was a stupid fly that kept trying to land on the lens of the projector.

I didn't get a chance to go on Saturday, couldn't get anyone to go with me, went and saw Hancock there on Sunday, though, decent theatre. (I'm still fairly new to Indy.) I think i'm spoiled with my HT setup though, in terms of sound... i hope the IMAX sound is better. The imaging was good on Hancock, but the actually sound itself was kindof meh.

Going tonite to see Dark Knight at 7pm in Imax at Showplace 16. I'll report back tomorrow morning. :D

HOLY CRAP. That was the most amazing movie experience i've ever had.

My one and ONLY complaint is that the room rattled a little bit during some of the really low hits, but the sound was flat out amazing there, the screen was good.

The movie was great in regular theatre, phenomenal in IMAX.

SolidSqual, what'd you think of that facility? I was really impressed. :D

Yeah, that theater is badass. There were moments when the side walls would shudder a bit but seriously what do you expect with that kind of low bass and high SPL? I think I heard change rattling in peoples' pockets too. I felt it in my balls and in no way did it steal anything from the movie.

Whoever tuned that sound system did a damn good job. I just hope some young ass working the projector doesn't screw around with it.
