Default What can I swap 12AU7 with?

After waiting for about a year, I finally brought my ASL pre amp to a repair guy (hopefully he can fix it) and I'm wondering what tubes can I put in place of a U7? 12AT7?

The AT and AZ will change gain, the BH offers better overal performace (and looks cooler too). I use 12BH7's as the cathode followers in my modded Anthem AMP-1, the original circuit used a pair of 12AU7. I also rolled 6189's, but like the 12BH7 performance the best.

Regardless, I would consult your manual / manufacturer before swapping any tube that isn't a DIRECT replacement, not just pinout, but voltage.

As the tubestore link above mentions, it's usually safe to go DOWN in gain, you need to use caution when going UP.
