Thumbs up New SVS PB12-Plus on the way

After reading a hundred posts here and more over at Home Theatre Spot, I emailed Stephen over at SVS and described my needs. After evaluating my room size, the way I play music, my home theatre needs, and my current desires (smaller box and cherry wood), Stephen recommended the PB12-Plus for my system.

We passed about 5 emails over 2 days discussing the details. The whole purpose of this post (besides the obvious brag) was to once again emphasize how helpful and patient SVS was with me. They took the time to answer every concern and made me feel like they wanted to talk to me. If their customer service is as good as their salesmanship, I know I will be more than satisfied with this subwoofer. I highly recommend that anyone looking for a sub should at least contact them for their advice.

Once I receive it, I will give everyone a short synopsis of how it sounds. As you can easily see by my signature at the bottom of this post, this will be a HUGE upgrade for me. I am very excited to see how this new addition will make me feel the action as well as hear it.

With all due respect to you, I just found what you said amusing. I know you probably meant 'smaller' as compared to the PB12-Plus2, but the Plus is still huge. :D

I had a similar experience with Steve at SVS. I nearly bought a big Velodyne (can't recall the model) at Tweeter on closeout, but it was way more than I could spend at the time so I got the PB12-Plus.

This is a shot of the PB12-Plus by a PSW505.

Well really I meant smaller than the PB12-ISD/2, but you are right, it is humorous. Yes it is probably 3 times the size of the subwoofer it is replacing. Since I planned to slide out the old and slide in the new at the same spot (front wall), I had to measure to ensure that I had 18" to spare. It should be a tight squeeze right beside the right RTi12 but have just enough room that they do not touch.

The dual speaker sub was originally recommended to me since it has a bit more "umph" and one of my desires was that you "feel" the action. The extra "umph" would indeed guaranteed that the room would be pressurized during those explosive moments. Also the system was a bit cheaper. The thing that really sold me on SVS was that Stephen kept steering me away from the Ultra. Given my experience in home audio (almost nil) and my dedication to movie over music (90%/10%), he suggested I not waste the extra $400 on something I did not need. He was sincerely trying to sell me something that would satisfy MY needs and not THEIR pockets. I really respect them for that.

I was thinking about replacing one of my end tables with it, but it did not seem practical. Besides the fact that I would have to run a 20' stereo cable to it (follow the wall around and then under the couch), I was also worried about having a lamp sitting on it or someone placing a drink on it. Nothing like a spilt, vibrating beer to ruin your whole day!

Since I underbought a sub for my room size the first time around, I was going to go for the Ultra too and he talked me out. I'm glad he did cause the Plus is plenty for us. Our family room is 22' x 14' with an 8' ceiling.

We are about even for movies and music with the surround system. The wife wears hearing aides and prefers the surround over the two channel rig.

You have to be careful with what you put on a sub. I put one of them Lightning Machines set to go off with audio. It's a trip with the lights off.
