    Exclamation Mmc690 Help!

    Brief Story:
I bought a pair of MMC690 and a pair of MMC650 a couple of months ago.
I installed the MMC650 and the crossovers got melted because of the heat, obviously the speakers dont work anymore. Then I bought some Kicker components, they are installed and working well.

After two months of installing the MMC650 I decided to install my MMC690, and like I already had a bad experience with the MMC650 I decided to check on the crossovers. They are getting extremly hot. They wont last too much if I keep on using them.

Im using a Lighting Audio 400.4 (75x4 rms) for the speakers.

What do you recommend me? Is there any other crossover I could use, other brand maybe, or does POLK has like heavyduty crossovers?

By the way, I live in PANAMA, I bought those speakers in Dallas, a store called Speakers and Tweeters or something like that. I could make use of the warranty, but Ive just started on installing all the equipment on my car, I dont want to waste more time on shipping them back and forth.

    Best regards,

You should try posting this 'south of the border' in the Car Audio Forum at the bottom of the main forum page. You'll get some helpful replies, there.

To address your issue, I don't have a clue why your crossovers would be melting. I can say that it most definitely shouldn't be because of poor quality; the MOMO stuff is really good.

Just brainstorming, the only thing I can think of is
    1) Where are you mounting you crossovers? Next to the firewall? Engine? Near a heater or something?
    2) Just how hot does it get in Panama?
    3) How loud do you listen to your system? How are your gains set?

The only thing I can really think of is that it's already hot in Panama, then you're blasting your speakers way to loud with an amp that probably more readily distorts than something from say Alpine, Kicker, Polk, JLAudio, etc. and so the distortion is heating up your crossovers.

Just thinking outloud. I honestly don't have a clue. But, like I said, post it in the car audio forum and you should get some help.

Something else is wrong. I ran the MMC690's for over a year and the crossover never had any problem.

My first guess would be the mounting location. Other than that Im not sure. Youd have to be feeding a TON of power into them to make the x-overs melt.

    Cool

    Thank you for your responses.

1)The ones that got melted were in the front doors. The 6x9 that I have right now are visible, in other words, they are not hidden in any part of the car because I took out the rear seats (because of the installation)

2)Well, Panama is not that hot. Actually we are in raining season. Right now its about 79°F.

3)Very, very LOUD. But arent they made for that?

Actually the amp is very good, I used to "move" with that amp 2 round speakers, 2 6x9 and 1 12´CompVR. Its a Bolt Lighting Audio Bolt 400.4 (75x4 rms).

    Best Regards,

Well, I'm not that familiar with Lightning Audio, so I won't say definitively, but....I'd still say it's not a nice amp.

Nicer than mine, though! (You see the one listed in my sig? You don't?! Oh...that's because I don't have one! :D)

Lightening Audio isnt that bad. True, they can be found at Wal Mart but they make solid equipment and their amps will make their rated power (from the ones Ive seen tested that is). As far as cheap amps go, you could do a lot worse.

Mac - Just out of curiousity, how would you compare them to Memphis Car Audio amps? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that's what I'm gonna hafta settle for if I ever get an amp.

Memphis is very solid gear. Ive never been a fan, I think mainly because of the stupid name but they do make quite good gear. Their amps easily exceed their ratings and they seem to be built well. Their speakers and subs are geared more to SPL where they do well but I would choose them for SQ.

Remember the name Fultron? Well, thats who Memphis used to be.

    Nope. Fultron no ring-a no bell-a (I'm doing Spanish homework...LOL). I'm 17...should I remember them?

    Cool

Oops! Sorry for the misspelling: LIGHTNING AUDIO.
I believe Rockford Fosgate owns a big part of Lightning Audio.

check the website: LIGHTNING AUDIO SITE

    This is my amplifier:
    B2.400.4
Bolt 4-Channel 1200 Watts Max Power
    My amp click here!

I think the problem is too much power. And Im changing my battery for a bigger one, because now Im installing a MTX1501.D amp for the "bass area" jeje
Do you think that with the bigger battery is going to be worse?

Maybe by installing a pair of components in the rear doors I might solve the problem, connecting them to the 2 channels of the 6x9, the power will be divided, so less power arrives to the 6x9, what do you think?
