Unhappy Help with bluetooth usb dongle please...

I ordered a bluetooth usb adapter so that I could connect my pocket pc to my computer. I just got it today and have been fiddling with it for a couple hours now with absolutly no luck. This is what I bought ~ dongle ~. I ran through the installation with the cd it came with and went from there. I've been searching the net and have gone through a few guides to get this damn thing setup but nothing seems to work. I have two icons in my system icon tray... one with a normal bluetooth icon that says "bluetooth devices" and the other is a bluetooth icon but red inside instead of white and says "bluetooth on MICHAEL-(computer number)". If I right-click the fancy red one it says bluetooth device not found. The same thing happens when I go into my computer and click on "My Bluetooth Places".

If it helps any I'm using a computer that runs off of win xp pro, an HP iPAQ H4150 that runs on pocket pc 2003 premium and that bluetooth usb dongle.

Any help at all would be great. Thanks,
    Michael

    michael,

This is what I would do:
    1. Remove the driver and other software that come with it
    2. Download the latest driver
    3. At the manufacturer website, read any faq to determine if there is incompatibility with other software/devices
    4. Install/reinstall the dongle software/driver, but don't connect the dongle until you're done with the driver installation.

ps: make sure you disable any Norton antivirus/internet security, or other protection while installing the software/driver. I've got so much grief that almost always caused by these protection software interfering with the process.

    Good luck!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Thanks. I'll try and see if they have a newer driver available. I have already uninstalled everything to get a fresh start.

At the moment I'm going over this site -linky- for anything that might be of use.

The only thing that popped up during installation of the driver was that the program wasn't one digitally signed by microsoft. It highly reccommended I stopped installation but I kept going.

Thanks for the help. I'll let ya know in a bit what happens...

Alrighty after lots more reading I found out what went wrong... sort of. Well according to the manual you jam in the cd and install the driver. About three quarters the way through the install you are supposed to plug in the usb dongle and continue the installation. As soon as you put that dongle in windows goes crazy and does its own little seperate install that overrides the programs and drivers that the cd has just installed. Damn microsoft... anyways basically I had to go into hardware management and "update" the program whore windows driver back to the original off the cd.

All is semi-good now but I still have a lot of fiddling to do to get the internet working and all that fancy goodness.

    Thanks again!

yep, that's always get in the way of installing USB devices. The installation software supposed to prompt you to plug in the device, in the middle of the install (true for most USB devices), but Windows plug and pray feature will try to take over the process, once it felt the penetration took place (:)) That's why I make the habit of completing the install of software/driver (if I can override the "please insert.." message). Have fun!

Yea now that I'm past that I can't seem to get the internet to work... after I configure it my internet on my computer gets this delay when I open a page while it "detects proxy settings". I've been playing with this thing for hours and no luck getting it to run activesync or get internet access :( Time to do yet another system restore to get things working again cause setting things back the way they were doesn't seem to work...

    Thumbs down

I work in IT and all I know is Bluetooth is a BITCH. Some versions don't work with each other and the dongles seem to be the worst. I try to steer away from it as much as possible. Did you make sure bluetooth is enabled on the pocket PC?

Yeah... I've tried everything. I didn't go to school today because I have the flu or something so I have spent hours and hours trying to get this damn thing working. I think I'm done for the night... I'll pick it up tomorrow and hope things go better then.

OK I managed to fix the proxy thing... under internet options -> Connections tab -> Lan settings --- I unchecked the automatically detect box... seems to fix that problem. Now to actually get it to work on the ppc is a different story.

edit: so I think I've somewhat narrowed it down to the next problem I need to fix. When I go into network connections I go into the properties of the local area connection. I click the advanced tab and I need to check the box that says "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" but when I click that and hit ok I get the error "An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the ip address that is required for automatic ip addressing."

man I hate this little dongle...
