Default Either I'm not very bright, or....

Ok I picked up some Pioneer CS-X5 bookshelf speakers from a garage sale. The specs on em are:

    4" Full Range Cone Type
    8 Ohms
    100 - 20,000 Hz
    Maximum music power 30W
    5.5" x 7.5" x 5"
    3.1 lbs

Ok anyway, they have normal + and - connectors on the back, so I grab some speaker wire and hook them up to my reciever, and I get no sound at all, nothing, then I tried another amp, still no sound at all, just as if I didnt have them hooked up, cant hear any pop or crackle or anything from them, just nothing.

Either I'm doing something wrong, or since these are surround speakers for a Pioneer system they will only work with a Pioneer system? Anyone wanna chime in?

    Thanks.

pop open the lid, take out the biggest woofer and look inside. See if everything (anything) is plugged up...

    Could be a blown crossover.

Don't think they would have a crossover, they are full range and just have one big driver?

Possible that somehow Pioneer made them so they only work when hooked up to a Pioneer reciever as rear surrounds?

Has anyone ever heard of speakers only working with a certain receiver?

Oh well I could use the enclosure, anyone recommend or got any decent 4" (100mm) full range drivers on the cheap?

    Thanks.

Is the speaker (the woofer) plugged into the terminals on the back?

    If not... thats your problem...

They could have a short - if they are plugged up.

Try parts express for replacement full range drivers. They should have a few to look at and at reasonable prices.

Thanks I will check out parts express.

Sid - I popped the speakers open, tried hooking directly to the driver, still nothing. They are blown I guess.

Anyway, I'm just gonna order some nice full range drivers, I like the enclosure, it looks nice.

I have never heard of any speaker designed for just one type of amp.

Only those type that are designed with a built in amp (car audio ala Bose) comes to mind.........box speakers will take any signal, just like your phone doesn't take phone calls from only Panasonic Phones.....

Thank you, I was trying to figure that site out, navigation is a bit confusing, even with my years of IT experience. :)

Did you check the resistance with your multi-meter? Just wondering...
It'd have been really easy to fry those little things though, so you're probably going down the right path...
