    Default Infinity Sterling SS-2005?

I was going to try to post this question on an Infinity forum, but looks like they don't have a forum. I'm a loyal Polk fan, but I may pick these up for "garage" speakers.

Somebody at work is selling a pair of Infinity Sterling Series SS-2005 for $25. They are 3-way, with a 8" woofer, 5" mid, and a polycell tweeter. I think they're from around '93 and went for around $500 back then. I plan to check them out to determine the condition of the drivers and foam surrounds.

Anybody know anything about them, how they sound, etc.?

    Thanks,

    Adam

No replies to my 1st post - probably no one knows anything about them or has any useful input. No problem.

However, I thought I'd report back because I did buy them.

Infinity Sterling Series SS-2005 - got em for $25 from someone at work.

Condition: 9/10 - surprisingly excellent, drivers/foam/tweeter perfect, grill perfect, cab almost perfect.

Build and fit/finish: 26 lbs each, decently heavy and solid, plain jane black rectangles, low rent vinyl veneer and spring clips (little disappointed in that).

Sound: they passed my minimum requirement - they don't make my ears bleed with harsh/bright highs. I owned Athena's for a while, but they hurt my ears on some material - too bright for me. The highs are pretty laid back, but not very detailed compared to my LS90s. There is enough bass to use without a sub - I would classify them as a huge bookshelf/monitors, definitely too short for the floor, would need about 16" stands. They are not ported, which surprised me. Imaging/soundstage is nothing special. They do not disappear and I never forgot I was listening to speakers - there is nothing very magical or involving about these speakers, but they do not have any major flaws that would make them unlistenable for non-critical listening.

Bottom line - for $25 bucks they will make excellent background speakers for my garage or the unfinished portion of my basement where I have my exercise equip.

Interestingly, some other speakers have been listed on the electronic bulletin board at work. Bose 901s for $300 and Swans Diva 2.1s with matching stands for $250. I'm no Bose fan, but maybe If I could talk him down to around $200...Hmmmm. Wife would kill me though!

Thanks for adding your input! It was interesting to see how you think they compare to Athenas.

Welcome Adam and thanks for the input. Sounds like a perfect speaker for your application.
