Default Ok i got a computer question, my laptop

Ive been building computers for several years but never fooled with laptops.. I have a new compaq m2000 notebook.. and it has a dvd player/cdr combo drive... I want a dvd burner in it.. after the newegg link for burners i seen they had a nec universal i guess dvd burner for laptops.. all the reviews said it fit like from dell to compaq to others.... anyone know if this is like a universal type thing in new laptops... they all basically fit the same?

I've done a bunch of searching for an answer on this. I would like to upgrade the burner in my Compaq 2585, but I can't seem to find a compatability list anywhere. I finally gave up and sent an e-mail to NEC . If I hear anthing back I'll let you know.

Most laptops/notebooks use proprietary optical drives. Not proprietary with respect to the types of connections, but proprietary as to the bay and slot size and the bevel.

Hard drives are different; usually just about any 2.5 inch drive is ok, since you mount it to a bracket anyway. That's one of the biggest improvements you can make to a laptop's performance: take out the (usually) 4200RPM drive and replace it with a 7200RPM drive. Huge increase in performance, although your battery life will suffer a little bit.

    faster,

I have the compaq m2007 with the same drive. I'm not sure what dvd burner would fit but I would recommend using the live chat feature in HP TotalCare. Tell 'em what you want and they should be able to give you the part number for the dvd burner.
