    What are your best recorded redbook CDs?

    I'll start -- everything I've got from Concord Records (jazz genre mostly). Superb quality.

    Surprisingly, I've got some great recently recorded material from relatively unknown artists who produced their own CDs. I would have thought that the major record companies would put out the best quality CDs, but that ain't necessarily so.

    I find that Telarc usually puts out good quality discs. Sometimes a little too shrill on the high end and sometimes the bass is a bit overdone...but in general, excellent quality.

    I ALWAYS use an ass-gasket. Never hover because of splash down and back splatter. I also float landing pad made from TP for a soft landing to avoid the above. One can never be too cautious when dealing with the general public. - RonP

    +1 for Mark Knopfler, sounds great. Also, in terms of remasters, I love the Dark Side SACD remaster, and the Back in Black remaster-this one's spectacular.

    Blue Note label - I haven't heard a bad recording yet!

    Dave Grusin (all of the recordings on GRP)

    Yellowjackets (GRP/Warner/Heads Up) - I use most of their recordings to audition audio systems. I highly recommend them; check out Time Squared (2003) available on CD. Their latest is Altered States (2005); sounds great as well.

    Telarc: Beethoven - Nine Symphonies/Dohnanyi, Cleveland Symphony (wonderful recording).

    London: La Traviata/Solti, Royal Opera House - Angela Gheorghiu, Sop. (this recording is to die for, absolutely brilliant), and...

    London: Wagner - The Ring Cycle (Complete)/Solti (WOW!)

    Just purchased a Diahann Carroll CD originally recorded in "stereo" in 1960 and re-released in 2005. Some of the cuts were recorded live. Amazing SQ. Better than most of today's recordings. The insert didn't indicate that it was digitally remastered, so should I assume it was?

    About any label can crank out a spectacular sounding redbook (blind hog/ acorn thing). This includes all from the big boys to the budget labels.

    Those that do it regularly in my experience are mostly Classical labels and mostly foreign: Varase Saraband, L'oiseau-Lyre

    But then there's always our own Rhino - what they can do with older material is amazing.
