    Default HDTV Plasma MONITOR q's

I understand that a monitor has no built-in tuners of any sort.

With that said, suppose I was going to feed said monitor only DirecTV and DVD signals? Is there anything in a regualr HDTV that has to decode or otherwise mess with the signal? Or even with a DirecTV HD signal I still need something for the monitor to handle it?

I'm a good ways away from buying a set, so this is just to satisfy my curiousity. Thanks ahead of time.

the direct TV receiver or your DVD player will feed the monitor, nothing more is needed.

Are you sure Russ...? I thought some monitors may have a preference. Say for instance the monitor will display in 720P so when you feed it a 1080i it will down sample it to 720p.

I have no clue so go easy on me.

Well, I am no expert either, I was just answering if he needed anything more than a source(s) and the monitor. Your right the monitor may down convert the signal, but it will display the image.

I thought he was asking if I have a source, can I feed it to the monitor and get an image, or will I need "something" beteen them the handle decoding or whatever.

What is ytour question again Wes?

The DirectTV HD box is all you need. But, I would avoid DirectTV if at all possible. They don't pipe the local HD channels to you, they have contracts, reception not as good when it rains or snows, etc.

    PT,

So DirecTV doesn't have just a corporate/generic HD feed for CBS, etc? I guess I would have to decide if giving up CBS, et al, in HD might be worth the gain to have an overall larger selection of HD channels, right? My parents have Comcast and have a very limited selection of HD material to choose from.

The local channels in Tucson totally blow when they aren't showing the decent stuff in the evening anyways. Being in the desert, I don't have to worry about the reception issues since it rains a dozen times a year and practically never snows.

    HBomb,

I was mainly hoping that if I piped a monitor an HD signal, it wouldn't have to down-convert it like the EDTV/monitor would. I know the DVD signal would have to be messed with since it's 480p and not quite as good as the HDTV.

I was mainly wanting to know if I had to have something between my sources (DirecTV or DVD) and a plasma monitor for the monitor to work as a TV for me and still be able to get that stunning picture quality?

i would imagine you'd need nothing more than the proper input/output connections/terminals. dvi/hdmi/component for example.

In my area it's Comcast, DirecTV (through Qwest so I can bundle a DSL), or over-the-air. I guess there is also DishNetwork, but I already have a 3-way DirecTV dish on my house, just need a proper receiver.

The local TV in Tucson is so bad, they'll have an hour of a damn car dealer selling new & used cars on TV when I know damn well there's football game on or they could be replaying episodes of the Simpsons or something.

    Default Connections

Oh yeah, on the connections for a monitor, is the HDMI or DVI the be-all-end-all, or are the component (Red, GReen, Blue) connections just as good?

Just wondering as most of the "monitors" I've seen don't have the HDMI connection but do have at least a couple of the component connections.

    I-SIG
The answer then is no. You do not have to do anything between you HD receiver and monitor.

    Toby
I have been considering dumping my D* service for Comcast but am very concerned about quality.

    Happy New years to all.
