I resently bought a laptop and have been using it for my music. I wasn't listening to it extremly loud, but it sounded like a static/crackling sound was coming from my tweeter. I have two RTi10's and they aren't even a year old. I was wondering if i damaged the tweeter or if it is the source that is causing the problem.

It's going to be hard to tell without hooking the speaker up to a different source. What are you using for amplification? If it's a receiver, just switching to a different source-- FM, for example-- should tell you if it's the laptop. Do both speakers do the same thing? Did it just suddenly start? "not extremely loud" can still be pretty loud. Clipping amps can kill tweeters, so you need to be sure that whatever you're using for amplification is capable of driving the 10's to the levels you're trying to reach, without distortion.

I'm inclined to think that your problem IS related to the source, since IMO it's difficult to make computers work well as hi-fi music sources, but that's just a guess at this point. Try the speakers on different equipment and report back with the results.

on some tweeters you can unscrew it and check out the diapragm. but i agree with jcaut try to use different amps just to make sure it's not coming from your laptop or if you have another known good set of tweeters laying around you can try it out too.

I'll have to agree with them as well. Hook them up to a cd player just to make sure. Laptops are notoriously noisy. I can't even stand to use headphones with mine just because of the background noise. As also already pointed out try to try a different amp and preamp.
