    Default Sound Dampening

Okay, you upraded you AVR/Amp, you upgraded or purchased your dream speakers, you finally got your fantastic sub and when driving it all together you find that it's loud to the rest of the house.. My viewing room is open to another large room that is tiled (echo). Are there ways to trap some sound in the viewing room? Would heavy curtains help? Also, the second floor rolls hard (maybe to hard) when the sub hits. The main floor is slab.. I'm looking for ways to keep the great sound contained or even better than what I have now.. Advice?

Area rugs, heavier drapes, wall hangings made of material can help with the echo situation, as far as the sub goes...

...vibrating the 2nd floor is bad because...???.

All that stuff will HELP of course but it will never eliminate the problem. I face this a lot as my fiance always goes to sleep before I do, leaving me to watch movies on my HT systems I paid thousands for at -40db :)
