If we call up Tony the Fish down in China Town, he may be able to "convince" Schmid to pull his bill off the table.

I swear, I seem to recall that just a few years ago, there was a device THAT WAS LEGAL.....and could be used to push a button and "BLOW UP" someone's car stereo speakers if you were within a certain range of them and they were playing above a certain decibal level! I don't remember all of the details....and my memory is obviously a little fuzzy about this....but I promise I'm not making this up! I thought it was great at the time, because I remember thinking it would be hilarious to do that with some of the 16 year olds that think that other cars on the road and people in houses three blocks away needed to hear their (c)rap blasting as loud as possible.

Seems like what I mentioned above would be a better solution than simply "banning" all amps with over 300 watts altogether.

Does anybody else remember seeing or hearing about this?

I don't recall such a device --- could we re-invent it to blow up Schmid's glasses to even larger proportions.

Wow... even I don't slide in under the bill. My two 10's knocks me out :(. I'm under the amp limit, though :D

And, aaharvel- my system is set up for resonable sound quality. The loudest it gets is when I'm cruising on the highway and need to drown out road noise. I added the subs for a little extra kick in my classic rock.

i have the last post on the previous page, so i think you guys missed it... i encourage you to write to the guy via the official channel here, but KEEP IT CALM... it will NOT help our cause if you rant and rave a la vinnie... logic and facts will sway the decision, negative emotion could actually push it the wrong way... my letter is reproduced below (not saying this is the best, but this is what i thought was a reasonable and logical argument):

    Mayor Slay:
According to the St. Louis Dispatch, the Board of Aldermen recently passed a law regarding car stereos in your city. I do not live in your city - indeed, I live in Dayton, Ohio - but what this bill represents is much greater than either city. The bill, as written, would outlaw, amongst other things, audio amplifiers greater than three hundred watts; the reason behind this measure is presumably to keep volume levels down. I personally own amplification in the measure of two thousand watts - more than six times the proposed limit - and yet, my stereo is inaudible outside of my car.

I, like many people, am annoyed (and at certain times of the night, outraged) at the people who cruise down the street with bass that shakes your house. I fully support any law or resolution, in any city, that forces these people to keep themselves under control. However, power in a car audio system can be put to uses other than sheer volume. A large number of people work on their stereo with the goal of perfecting the sound - making a jazz trio sound as though they are performing right in front of you. This can take a considerable amount of power, and a large amount of equipment - some of which could be outlawed by this bill - and yet, you never hear about these people, because their cars are utterly silent from the outside.

If none of this might sway you, I at least urge you to consider the audio-related businesses you have in your city. A quick search on the internet reveals at least ten audio businesses in St. Louis; a bill like this would force each and every one of them to close. Please consider the livelihoods of the owners and the employees of these businesses.

Even as I write this, news of the potential bill is exploding across audio-related boards all over the Internet. Your decision in this matter will resound worldwide. I urge you to make the informed decision - to veto this bill.

    Thank you, David Huston

here's what craig the cock got...

    To: Craig Schmid

Subject: Re: The Anti-Automotive Audiophile Bill

Comment: This is a note to inform you, sir, that the Automotive Audiophiles of America will not stand for such Stalinistic ideology within the United States of America. We will be contacting elected officials all over the country, lobbying against your proposal (which your local Mayor has yet to sign). In addition, a form letter will be going out to an large number of major Professional Sound designers and manufacturers, all of which, we are sure, will not take kindly to a bill that gives yourself a pat on the back from the midget-minded lemmings you seek to placate and gives your kind nearly Hitler-esque powers.

This is America... The US of A. We love our apple pie, we love our families, we even respect your right to be an ass and propose idiotic, ill thought out, poorly designed, and ignorantly motivated legislation. It's your right... and we'll drop over dead before we let anyone take it away from you. But we don't have to like it, and we don't have to stand by quietly while it gets shuffled through the system.

Professionals, engineers, automotive sound specialists, amateurs and competitors will unite to thwart your legislation.

We SUPPORT banning obscene volume levels in residential neigborhoods, even in business neighborhoods. We support Noise Ordinances. We are not the kids with two 15" speakers in the trunk and a piece of junk amplifier.

We are the 20 to 50 crowd with very expensive, hard earned PROFESSIONAL GRADE audio equipment in our vehicles -- not to blast at levels that will shake a room or a street, but to listen in our enjoyment.

We go to extremes to not piss anyone off. We soundproof our vehicles. We add "damping" material everywhere to keep the sound in... and keep our neighbors happy with us.

We use speakers that are sometimes very inefficient... inefficient speakers often have the best tonal accuracy and sound quality - truest to the musical recording... these speakers often require 200, 300, 500 watts just to push a small 6" unit. They may be so inefficient that it requires 200 watts to make a 6" speaker as loud as the average teenager's 10" speaker gets on only 50 watts.

We are here to stay Mr. Schmid.

    Get over it.

i wasn't sure what to call something that the board had passed but the mayor had not yet approved, so i called it 'a law the board has passed' :p

EDIT: PBD - for all your ranting, that was a surprisingly effective and coherent letter... i salute you :)

first off....aaharvelwtf---youre a complete idiot. Your opinion sickens me. Honestly.

If you think this law is anything reasonable, youre an idiot.

I just spent 1000 bucks on ****ing sound deadening to make sure my truck is quiet on the outside...even with my 3000 watt sub amp and 450w amp for my highs.

THE only REASONABLE solutiont to stop this is decibel meters. Plain and simple. AND IT SHOULDNT STOP WITH CAR AUDIO. It should be every ****in car on the road. My house has been rattled more times by harley's than it has ppl driving by with loud audio systems.

Trust me, I'm the first guy to say rip out all the equipment is some guys car when youre three blocks away and can hear "Who? Mike Jones...bummmmpppppppp" Thats stupid, but to outlaw a single 15 or more than 2 10s is rediculous. I know guys that compete in SQ with Focal 15s.

This hits very close to home for me even though I'm a few thousand miles away. Not only is this retard messing with my passion, he's messing with my money, and my life. I work at a car audio shop and this would kick my ass right out of college until I could find another job that pays as good as this one. I average around 11 bucks an hour with comission. Unless the state wants to give me grants, if this was happening in my town I would be at his office everyday and every city council meeting and make damn sure it didnt go through...

    this pisses me off

Let's ban all cars since there are so many people that speed. Many of these speeders are also involved in accidents that kill innocent people. There are already laws there, but let's do it to stop the speeders. This is a totally stupid thing, and that's the same way I feel about anyone trying to impose limits such as these on car audio.

I absolutely dislike it when people drive by my neighborhood blasting their music in the middle of the night. I also dislike when I am at a stop light and someones subs are vibrating my freaking reariew mirror. I especially dislike it when theres individuals blasting their profane filled music around my kids. I also dislike laws that try to tell me what I can and can't put for audio equipment in my car. Go after the individuals that are braking the law, not the rest of us. I do not get audio equiptment to blast it and show off. I spent my hard earned money for me and my family to enjoy good tunes in the car.

Neo I will go the site and write a letter myself. Thanks for the information.

let's steal Schmid's fake hair and hang it from a big CB whip antenna and drive around St. Louis proudly displaying it as our non-violent protest.

then we can throw a pie at him like they do in england. or better yet... we can get big "no smoking" red circle's with lines through them and put them over giant bill board pictures of the guy as political satire.

Ghandi hasn't got **** on me.

But throwing a pie in his face would cross the line of being "non-violent", PBD.....

And I don't think that is a rug on his head....I think it's just a bad brush-over, which look even worse. Guys with brush-overs would actually be better off just going with a transplant or placing a call to to their local Hair Club For Men :p

Yep, that sounds about right, Bob....thanks for the info. I think it was something that would do about what your link described (minus the nuclear reaction :p )...because it would send additional wattage through their speakers at a rate that would blow them. I know this was legal in Iowa a few years back, because my firend who lives there was seriously thinking about getting one! Haven't heard anything about it for a few years now, though.....
