I rarely run across a thread or review where a piece of tube gear is a POS. Anybody buy or audition a tube component that they would not recommend?

Oh hell yes!!! I bought a POS DIY tube amp from some guy off ebay, it was supposed to be rated at 35 or 50 wpc (can't remember exactly) The thing distorted so bad that I took it to a local shop to have it tested for the actual output. It failed miserably after hitting about 12 watts, it clipped something fierce. I was able to get my money back and Hoosier21 (Russ) sold me a BEAUTIFULL ASL amp that I use to this day. It's powering Deb's 2 channel SDA rig.

I personally have never experienced a bad piece of tube gear. But a few months ago I was talking to someone at upscale audio about the ASL Wave 20s that they were clearing out, and I asked him why. He told me that as a whole the ASL gear was very low quality, and that they had far too many problems with them so they were dropping the whole line. He also mentioned having one customer who's Wave 8 burst into flames.
Now as mentioned before this was just another man's comments to me. I have nothing against ASL, and have seen a number of favorable comments about them both here and in other forums and reviews. But I guess it does go to show that there is definitely some bad tube gear around.

My Wave 20s haven't had any problems at all. I assume they are about a year old, as I got them from Doro at PFest 2005 and I think he got them early in 2005 new in box. I had heard they would drift out of bias quite a bit, but I check them once a week and so far the haven't drifted out of spec tolerances. They are supposed to be ar 330 and have never been further than 2-3 off at any time I've checked them. IMO, they would be hard to beat for the $350/pair they have been selling them for at Upscale.
