Wireless Internet/Non-wireless router

Does anyone make something that plugs into a non-wireless router and sends off a signal for wireless internet??

Just wondering if someone makes one of those instead of having to shill out 70 bucks on another router

You can do a search for "Ethernet to Wireless Bridge Adapter" but I think at a cost standpoint you would be better off getting yourself into a linksys wireless router..

They do make wireless access points, but it'll cost you more than simply buying a new wireless router. Check out the Linksys WRT54G router. Excellant bang for the buck. I've had one for about 3 years and it's a champ. Usually you can find them for about $70 with $20-$30 in rebates. Check at Best Buy.

i have the linksys router/modem combination wcg2200 gateway i got for around $120. Now I don't have to depend on the cable company for any **** Netgear products, nor do I have to pay an extra $10/month for THEIR wireless upgrade capability. After just a year, the product which actually SECURES your wireless connection with WEP passwords actually pays for itself.

edit- 54mbps capability is what you want.

well i have a d-link at my house that works flawlessly, the di-624 i believe, ill probably just get the same thing for her house. Ran me about $50.

make sure it supports the 802.g format. It goes to 54mbps.
The old standard was the 802.b. at only 11mbps.

that's a nice machine, but I thought wireless G and even wireless A hit a brickwall at 54mbps? Either at 2.4ghz or 5ghz frequencies.
Is this not the case?

If you're just using this for internet access, who cares if it can reach speads (and probably just peaks) of 54mbps? Your internet connection is not (and won't for what I'd imagine to be quite while) be limited by speeds of 11mbps.

Now, if you're going to be sharing documents and stuff, too, then get the G.

I've had three linksys routers, none of which worked and were promptly returned. Had a D-Link that's been working for 3 years, no problems, and a Netgear that's worked for about a year so far.

I guess you'd have to admit, as far as reliability is concerned, they're all about as good as the next, at least as far as our collective experience is concerned. You've had bad luck with Linksys while Dlink has worked for you. Our Linksys equipment is working great, but I'm left trying to find a new USB adapter for my laptop 'cause my Dlink one stopped working.

I had switched from a D Link to a Linksys due to issues with me trying to connect back to the corporate network via VPN. For some reason, the D-links and other brands were not consistant from model to model with supporting VPN. All Linksys models had no issues. Again, the WRT54G is simply a champ all around. They've had some good firmware upgrades over the last few years.

Now, VPN support aside, I had no other issues with the Dlink I was using.

Maybe I'm getting too deep here in geek land! I'll hush now. :D

If you want to stay <$100 you're probably stuck with the usual brands that have been mentioned already. If you want to go really hardcore you could pickup something like this but I'm asuming that's way out of your price range and is probably nicely overkill for a home system.

You can get access points or just another router. Another router might be cheaper but an access point would probably be an easier and cleaner alternative.

Sure do. In college I used a Dlink wireless G router. It sucked. It couldn't hold the CAT5 cables securely and I was always losing my wifi connection, even though I was about 10 feet away. It blew. We were always resetting it.

Now I have a Linksys router. Its awesome. Never fails. Strong strength through several walls and on a different floor. Easy to setup. The settings configuration is very simple to use. Good price. Good quality. Good tech support the few times I've need them.

I had forgotten, but the two times I called tech-support, my problem (which was user-induced :D) was resolved.

I don't dislike dlink, but simply prefer the setup and operation of the linksys. Also I have used tons of linksys components since '98 and have never had an issue (fingers crossed).

Have had this router for a few years. No problems to date. One thing to note is that the firmware for this model is open-source. There are many different programmers releasing firmware for this product aside from the official Linksys releases. The third-party firmwares often have extra/advanced features. Also, this model has had several revisions, I prefer the original release - v 1.0 - because most third-party firmwares are compatible with this revision. Differences between revisions are cosmetic and hardware/feature based.

im having a problem with my router. (d-link) Works great until the wireless option is clicked. Then itll shut the internet on/off for a split 2nd. Seems like its not enough to actually shut down the internet, just shut down any programs running off of it. IE. AIM or the computer game im running. But i turn the wireless option off and voila...no problem...anyone have any ideas?

it does it to all 3 computers on the network, my laptop, desktop, and roommates laptop. Itll do it every 30 minutes or so, if it wasnt for gaming, i really wouldnt care, but it shuts down the game because it loses the connection, gets really annoying

Actually, it would be in theory, but in reality I'm not going to find sites that let me download 15mbps. :D

For less than $20 Airlink makes a reliable G router, and their wireless G adapters are less than $10, including the small USB adapter. Of course those are all Fry's weekend special prices but they are regularly there. I would not spend $70 on a wireless router.

Phones will royally Eff up your connection. So say you gat a call, there goes the connection, you make a call....connection gone. If so you need to get 5.8ghz phones, and cut down on cell phone use if you do that a lot during gaming time.

D-link makes an Access Point that gives off a wireless signal without being a router itself. I use it at my school to avoid conflicts with other routers. I bought mine at Office Depot.

I don't think any cell phone protocol goes close to 2.4GHz. All GSM's are below 2GHz (850/900/1800/1900) and 3G's go to 2200MHz at highest. CDMA, I think, is 1900MHz.
