Different Midbass, Tweeter, Enclosure, Finish, Baffle
The Midbass on the CS400i is lighter, different material. The surround is also lighter and not near as stiff.
The tweeter on the 400i is a silk base, with the metal laminates (magnesium, titanium and aluminum (I think), and has a bigger magnet as well as a larger driver depth. The internal parts of the tweeter on the 400i is of higher quality as well.
The enclosure of the 400i is taller and not as wide as the i40 -- its also finished in a vinyl.
The i40 is a veneer, and is a more slender design - I also believe the enclosure is larger internally for more bass response.
The i40 also didnt use a non-diffraction baffle like the 400i did.
And of course, the 400i uses a different crossover to work with the different drivers, all that.

A CS400i would go well with a RT1000i, whereas a CSi40 would go well with a RTi100.

Thanks guy`s..
I have the 40i..
Just wondering if I should look for another center speak after reading all these center speaker type questions..
55i`s up front, and 38i`s in the back
tweets don`t match but hey...Wtf, right..?!?
maybe upgraded tweets in the 55`s would make em match better
Tweeter difference between Tri-Lam and Silk
Picture taken by Disney Joe
Just a slight difference in magnet depth/driver depth.
The Tri Lam can NOT fit in a i40, it does not fit due to the depth difference. (From what I remember)

Sell the 40 and get a 400. Problem solved.

Beardog - the CSi40 is a pretty good center channel. I had a 400 prior to the i40, and I have a CSi5 in the bedroom HT system. I like the sound of the CSi40 the best. You might consider doubling up the center channel if you want more output. I went with a CSi40 below and above my monitor. It really made a difference in presence within the room. Don't let all the talk about soundwaves crashing into each other from the two center channels scare you off. Sometimes things work in spite of all the technical hocus-pocus!
