    Default Airshow

My family and I attended the Ft. Smith Airshow this past Saturday. I think the website's still up (at least it was a few minutes ago)- http://www.fortsmithairshow.com that tells some of what was there. We had a great time. I took a few pictues- 314 to be exact - and some of them were pretty good. Here's a few that I have here on my computer at work.

We went to the Mather AFB airshow a couple of weeks ago.
    Way cool.

I liked the pyro show where they made it look like the warthog dropped something.

And of course the Blue Angels were there. The Air Farce needed the Navy to come and show off how well flying can be accomplished.

Yeah- They had some fireworks. We felt the heat off this one, and off that %$#! jet-truck too, and we weren't particularly close. The smoke from this blast is what the A-10 is flying in front of, in the picture I posted above, as it was a very bright day otherwise.

Blue Angels were here several years ago, but I didn't get a chance to go. The Thunderbirds put on a heck of a show, though, all kidding aside. And my son got to get all their autographs, which was extremely cool for him.

Going to an airshow at least once a year has been a tradition for my family, or at least for my dad and I. I remember being scared of the loud engines and absolutely hated it whenever they passed close by - which was quite often. Who knew that years later, I would adore military aviation!

Fun stuff. Amazing pictures Jason. I can really admire them because I know how difficult it is to get a good shot of those jets whizzing by with a digi cam. You got some great photos, specifically the F-117 with the moon and the A-10 with the smoke! Saved to my HD for sure! Thanks for sharing.

Our airshow isn't until the 5-7th of May.

Great shots Jason. Zero, I remember that as well. Growing up in Toronto I never missed an airshow that I can remember. Besides, Dad used to fly and was a skydiver at the CNE years ago. So doing stalls and loops in an aircraft happened real early in life for me. If there's an airshow near, I'm there.

I haven't figured out the "balls" part, yet, but yes it is. He was pretty excited to get to be there, too.

Thanks for the comments. I've got lots of good pictures of the Thunderbirds, but most of them look just like the pictures they have posted on their website.

George: I wish I had gotten a picture of him laying in the back, but he didn't hang around long and I didn't move quick enough.

Skynut: Thanks- I see now. That had me stumped.:o

Cathy: The last picture (in the first post) is of the F-117A Stealth Fighter. Unlike the other planes that flew "demos", the Stealth stayed pretty high up. It was difficult to get pictures of it, because it would fly out of sight and then just come back in view and circle around every now and then. I just happened to catch it in front of the barely-visible cresent moon-- that was about 10:00 AM, I think-- by accident. I didn't realize it until I got home and looked at the pictures. That made the otherwise dull-looking shot a little more special, IMO.

audiobliss: They were "dropping" faux bombs. I don't think they were actually dropping anything, though. It was just some pyrotechnics used to give a little more visual impact to the show. That particular "blast" was the biggest one I saw, and was either done during the A-10 demo, or the local 188th fighter wing performance, I can't remember which. They did manage to start a few moderate grass fires, but the fire trucks were right on top of it.

Here's one last one of the Thunderbirds. There's one just like it on their website, but I actually took this one.

    Jason:

Outstanding job on the photos. Dead on with quality and composition.

    What are you shooting with?

A little crazy might not hurt, but mostly I just think you'd have to be good. Of course, they weren't quite as close as the picture makes it look like, but still... They did another trick where four of them were flying in the diamond formation and the other two (or maybe it was just one. It was so fast I'm not sure) came flying in fast and went right through the middle as the four broke out of the diamond. I didn't get a picture of that, but I almost went back for the second day just to try to!.

    John,
Thank you for the compliments. I'm using my old 300D Rebel. I had the 70-200 F4L and the kit lens with me, but most everything I shot with the 70-200. That was the first time I had tried to take pictures at an airshow and, unfortunately, most of the action in the air was more-or-less into the sun. That made it tough to get good contrasty shots, with the sky being so bright and all. I took a lot of pictures because I figured I would only get maybe 50% keepers. Out of roughly 300 pictures though, I think I only deleted 5 when I went through them the other night. Other than cropping and re-sizing, and a levels tweak on a few shots, these are as-shot. When I get some time I'll go back through and convert some of them more carefully, as I have a few I think are pretty good.

No, I wouldn't know anything about it.

I DO know enough that rivalries can exist without being insulting. But, since that don't seem to teach that in the Navy, you may feel free to stick it and your bell bottoms up your zorch, twice.

    Great photos.

Your photo of the F117 reminds me of seeing them practice above the Mojave desert before they were well known. I remember seeing their shadow on the ground then looking up to seem them overhead with chase planes. No sound. ;)
Life gets more interesting the more we play.
