Oddly enough, I put less blame on him than the Governor of LA for the post Katrina horror show. I'm thinking I might be wrong now. Good God, stop being a politician and be a leader! You think Rudy was worrying about ticking people off when he made decisions on 9/11. He was about getting the job done, plain and simple. Ray needs to take that example and run with it.

Why start a thread like this when it can't be taken to real discussion due to our "no political discussions" ban? Bad idea.

Lou, I always thought I wanted to do the same thing, so I did. It was a ****hole. I had a nice meal there, and that was about it. The French Quarter? A good place to get puked on, or knifed is the way I saw it.

I have faith that New Orleans will rise to the challenge. That being said, I blame the Department of Homeland Security much more than I do FEMA.

Lou's take, from an emergency services backround/standpoint.

Locals failed big time, no coordination between local and state authorities. apparently mayor and Gov didnt get along....thats fine, but in a time like that, put it aside you idiots!

Fema, and all fed level responders, took at least 24 hours too long to realize the cluster eff that was going on. Usually they should put feet on the ground and at least relay what the situation with local and state resources, then supplement from there or take over as needed. It happenned way too late.

it represents a failiure on virtualy all levels. I cant understand why so few place any blame on local and state. DOnt tell me nothing could be done, plenty could have been and it just wasnt. there was a void of leadership, hence mobilization at the start was horrendous.

in NJ, a horror show of a state on many levels, but one of the good things is there are more ambulances and firetrucks ready for action than you can shake a stick at. on 9/11, do you have any idea how many ambulances were ready to go for that? I had a crew at Liberty state park waiting for a "second wave" of patients that would never come (because that was a kind of thing that you walked away from, or died, not much happenned in between). there were more ambulances there than could have been counted, at least hundreds.

There were mistakes made, plenty of em, but things at least things got done, maybe not the most efficiently in hindsite, but 9/11 was about getting it done, no politics, no B^llsh*t, just get it done.

during Katrina, it was politics and ass covering from the bottom to the top. In my view, that political handball game started with Nagin and Blanco. it was a disgusting display to say the least. Feds should have known it was a cluster eff and found a way to take over much faster, for the sake of saving lives.

this is not a political discussion for me, its a plea that we all learn genuinly who did what wrong, without the guise of political blame game, so it can be learned from, and NEVER have it happen again

Nah. Im a die hard Reagan conservative and always will be. Those are the beliefs and values I have and hold sacred. Right now their is no party in Washington that shares these values.

The Republican party is no different than the Democratic party so I see no reason to further support them. While theyve been in power, theyve spent money and grown the government faster and more than any Democrat ever could and today, this illegal immigration amnesty crap is just another nail in the coffin. The Libertarian party is the most conservative party in Washington right now and the party whose platform is closest to my beliefs.

I dont have any allegiance to any one party, only to my own beliefs and values. If the Democrats start talking about limited government, strong military, low taxes, school vouchers, border control, freedom and individual responsibility, Id vote Democrat in a heartbeat.

I'm from the New Orleans area. Grew up here and lived here all my life in south Louisiana.

The media focused on all the bad horrible things. Unless you are from here and know the type of benevolent people down here, you cannot even begin to imagine how much good occured during this terrible disaster. I have never seen people pull together so much and help each other. Again, the media showed very little of these events. I have talked to many people who used their personal boats and risked their lives to save people from their roof tops.

We are relatively simple people. We like to fish, hunt, enjoy sporting events, get together and cook / entertain and the majority of the population is blue collared workers. We are a potpourri of cajun and creole. Irish, italian, german, french, spanish, and african-american. It just wouldn't be New Orleans any other way.

In any major city, there is an evil element that exists, and if some of you don't think that looting and other similar events wouldn't happen in your city then you just don't get it. 80 percent of the city was flooded and it was anarchy; unfortunately that is what makes the news and what the media focused on.

Do any of you think that any leader would have done a better job? This was a disaster of unprecedented proportions. Unless you have been here and actually walked around some of the areas, seeing it on TV gives it no justice. This is why the mandatory evacuation was ordered (the first ever for NOLA). The sad truth is that some folks just didn't have a means to evacuate. The horrible events that unfolded at the Superdome were terrible; but if those people wouldn't have evacuated there as a last resort they would have probably perished.

The experts have been predicting this for many years. Many times Louisiana has tried to fund improving hurricane protection but improvements were never passed. We are also losing our coastline at an alarming rate due to sal****er intrusion from many canals that the oil companies built in the marshes. These canals were used to lay pipelines and provide other facilities so that the oil and gas could be found and routed to production plants so the rest of the country can have energy. Now, the cost of the original hurricane improvements is a bargain compared to what it is going to cost to recover New Orleans. With as much oil and gas that comes out of this state (I've read up to 30% of what is provided to the US), you would think that we would be one of the richest states. Instead, we are among the poorest because Louisiana doesn't get their share due to certain regulations. Texas gets their share but we don't. That has to change.

I've met all kinds of people from all over this great country who are here for the recovery effort. People that want to work and want to help others. We, the people of Louisiana, thank you. In return, these people have said that they have been treated so well and that we are among the nicest people they have ever met.

The French Quarter was spared and is safe. Anytime besides Mardi Gras (too crowded and too drunk at that time), it is a great place to watch live music and there are many world class restaurants in the city. No place like it and I've been around. Personally, I don't live in the Quarter because it is a little too hectic for me but it is a great place to visit if you know where you are going. You have to blend in with the locals and have a great time.

If you got puked on it was probably by some blundering drunk tourist! The bars are open 24 / 7, you can walk out on the street with a beer, etc. Some people just go crazy with this kind of liberty. Unfortunately, what happens is that people come here to party plain and simple. In the process, they tend to trash the city up. What a shame.... give a hoot and don't pollute...

And that's all I'm going to say.............

no surprise there, typical media B.S. the horror show stuff is what sells. As the viewing public, we have some blame in that too

bluntly, yeah dude, I do. huge disaster, yeah. but the local leadership was near void. Politics played a roll in how the, the governor, and the feds acted. Now, does that prob start at the top or bottom? Well probably never know at this point since the issue is so politicized, well never get the right eyes on the situation to truly learn from mistakes. and thats a shame too

everything else you said, cant argue. you got eyes there, I dont. Glad to read some good stories, I'm sure there were many, and lack of coverage on that is also a shame.

Florida got hit with what, 10 hurricanes last year INCLUDING Katrina and you never really heard anything about it. New Orleans got hit with 1 and its a major catastrophe. Hell Gulf Port Mississippi got clobbered by Katrina as well and theyre well on their way to recovery.

Any local government that is in charge of a city built 50 feet BELOW the ocean, and doesnt prepare for a big whopper of a hurricane, is incompetance beyond measure.
