    Default Old Magi SMG's

Can anyone tell me the value of these? I would guess them to be from the early 80's. Cosmetically they are in good shape, but one tweeter does not work.

The reason I ask is a friend loaned them too me awhile back, because he had recently upgraded to some 1.6's. When I got them home we discovered the bad tweeter. Seems it was very common for the wire to corrode and break in the older models. Anyway I have had them now for almost a year just sitting in the corner, while he debated repairing them or not. Well the other day he called and told me it would cost $75ea to have the tweeters repaired with new coated wire that won't corrode. He then told me that if I was willing to pay for the repairs I could just have them.:D

I'm assuming in good working condition these have to be worth more than $150, but I'm just curious how much?

Also any comments from those with experience with SMG's would be very welcome.

    Thanks Much!

I've seen them go on audiogon for $250-$300, so go for it, I hear they are nice speaker. I am actually planning to upgrade to maggies myself this summer!

Thought I would just add on to this thread to ask some of you Magi vets a question.

Two weeks ago I finally got around to dropping these off for repair. I'm headed out to pick them up today and am really looking forward to getting some time with them tonight.

My question is.....Will I be OK powering these with my (SQ-88) 55w/ch tube integrated? I'm not the type to listen at extreme volumes, and I also only sit about 7 feet back.

    Thanks!

I think I'll be good. I just happened to skim the review on the amp I have, and noticed the reviewer was powering a pair of 1.6's so I shouldn't have any trouble with my lowly baby pans.:D

    Ok I have a problem.

I brought the SMG's home from the shop yesterday and they sound quite muffled, kinda like they have a blanket thrown over them. At first I was questioning if the tweeters were even working however when I pull the fuses the tweeters obviously go dead.

I'm having a tough time believing that the tweeters were done wrong, since I've heard a number of good comments about this shop's repairs on old maggies.

Is it possible that the new tweets just need some serious break-in or do you think there is something else going on?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

they shouldn't require that sort of break in. I'd say something is amiss.

That's what I'm afraid of. I just thought that maybe the new wire and glue might take some time to work in. At least that's what I was hoping.

No, something is definately wrong. I might try a bigger amp if you have one handy, but I doubt it's a power issue- When I run the 35W amp to the 3.3R's alone, I get a little muffled top end but the bottom drops out. Since the SMG's have no bottom end, lack of power "might" sound like muffled highs, but again-I doubt it.

I too doubt that it is a power issue. But just to make sure I'll hook them up to my Halo either later tonight or tomorrow.
