    Default distant dream

so, i just picked up this CD from one 'crazy' on the forum, and it's pretty good... from what i remember (last listen was a few days ago), it's mostly chilled rock instrumental stuff, with vocals sprinkled throughout... if i recall correctly, there's a storyline that goes with the CD, but i don't have the jacket here, so i can't confirm... PM 'crazy' to pick up a copy, if you're into this sort of thing...

i'll post a more detailed review when i replace the tweet i blew yesterday (my first!)

You blew a tweeter? How? Why? During what?

Yeah, Crazy PM'd me about those CD's, too. After I get my headphone rig and ELP, I plan on picking one up. I'm just trying to direct all my funds toward the equipment right now.

i have no idea, i was playing some techno... loud, but not nearly as loud as i have in the past, and not for nearly as long... suddenly the stage shifts to far left, and i realise i've blown my right tweeter... megabummer...

Ok, no listening to techno for me!!!

Neo - sorry to hear about your speaker. I hope fixing it doesn't cost a lot.

Thanks for the nice words about the CD & yes, there is indeed a storyline that goes along with the songs ...

I produced the CD and founded the project. I also composed most of the music along with the vocalist. So to put it a nutshell, this was my baby ...

Whao, you composed most of the music and produced the CD? Wow! That's awesome! Does that mean you have recording equipment and what-not, too? Or did y'all go to a studio and have it recorded? Did you recruit the artists?

    Hmm...maybe I should read that link...lol...

i finally figured out what blew the tweet way back when in my truck...

    Celine f****** Dion

Her 'all the way' greatest hits cd SOUNDS great, i mean, to me, its a very nice 'get a feel for your audio system' cd to listen to... not that i'm into that friggin music, it just sounds good.

Anyway -- I was listening to the same cd on my little home rig... and I hear a little 'crackle crackle rice krispies' on vocals... i'm like "what the f***".

so i throw the cd into the computer, rip it, analyze it... sure enough... it's got a very narrow dynamic range at the top... long story short - the recording has some fierce distortion in it... what you'd call 'violent sounds' ... played very loud for very long periods of time and voila -- speaker will make that sound with clean recordings after a while... good thing i noticed it now... i'd have to bust up my home speakers considering they're the first home speakers i've been happy with in like... um... my whole damn life. they're cheap (m-30's) but i'm very happy with them.... very very happy.

pbd - i have her christmas CD, and the organ parts make some of the worst distortion ever... i'd love to crank it, cause pipe organs turn me on, but i fear for my speakers with that CD in the player...

I used to have a LOT of recording gear including a fully motoring 24 track mixer, 2 dedicated computers (1 for audio and 1 for MIDI), a really nice condensor microphone, 3 keyboards, 2 sound modules, 1 digital piano, 1 drum set (with the works!) and a voice booth made up of matresses standing upright (!!!) but I sold most of the stuff after completing the album.

I just have a few things remaining in my studio now since my second album (in progress) is being recorded in California.

2 of the songs from the album were recorded in a professional studio.

The vocalist and I recruited all the artists.

Wow! That's something, for sure! Sounds like you went all out. J/c, what brand of keyboards/digital pianos do you use at that high a level?

I bet selling off some of that stuff helped with the B&W's, eh?

Audio - what does J/c mean?

The mixer (it's also a hard disk recorder) was a Roland VS-2400

    http://www.rolandus.com/products/pro...3&ParentId=110

Computers were both Dells with over 1GIG RAM, 17" flat panels

    Software: Sonar 4.0 Producer Edition

Synths & modules were all Rolands and Korgs

    Older version of this:

An older Roland sound modeul and a much older version of this - I thin kit was called the XV-5050:

An older model Korg (forgot the name) & Roland (JV-80) keyboards as well as the amazing Korg Karma

This one was used even by the great Jordan Ruddess of Dream Theater - now if only I could play that well ;)

    j/c - just curious

Man, you definitely had a nice set-up. When I get my audio setup somewhat finished, I'd like to get a keyboard. I haven't really looked at them much, but I'm drawn to the Yamaha P120.
