    Default Another Adcom question

Hi! I have started looking for an amp as some of you suggested. I have found an Adcom GFA 5500 for $415 which he says works perfectly. I looked around on the internet a little and read that this amp replaced the GFA 555II which is one amp I was told would be good for me. Does anyone know aanything about the 5500 and whether this is a good price? Again, thanks for all your help!

    Cindy

Just remembered a site someone here mentioned; outlaw audio. I looked at their Model 2200 M-Block Amp and now I wonder if I should go with these rather than deal with the seller above who has NO feedback I can check; I found him when I did a Google search.

    Cindy:
Sounds like you've been doing some homework. The price on the GFA 5500 is a good one, however as tempting as it is you really run a risk if you have no verifiable feedback on the seller. Stay with places that you can research a sellers reputation a little bit. Plenty of snakes on the internet.

You can sometimes find items on Craigs list as well, although I am not familiar with an ability to get feedback.

As to the Outlaw. That is a mono block design. What that means is it only will drive a single channel into a single speaker. You would need two of them for stereo. Many high end audio users go with a dual mono block set-up because they believe it provides the absolute best separation between channels and distributes the amplifing duties through a separate power circuit for each channel.
You do not need a mono block, unless that is what you want. I suspect you thought it was a normal 2 channel/2 speaker amplifier.

    Zen Dragon,

Hi! I have hopefully found a different Adcom GFA 555II. He is asking $400 which is negotiable. I am able to get feedback on him so am planning to try this route. The problem I'm having now is making sure I have room to set all this up with the proper ventilation. I would prefer to have just one unit so am going to try and not be in a hurry as far as getting what I need. All of the equipment is going into a 3 piece wall unit which is extremely heavy and a pain to deal with so I'd kind of like to get everything done at the same time. May not happen but who knows... Thanks again for the help.

    Hi Cindy...
thought I throw my 2 cents in, since I've been shopping for the Adcom 555 myself for the last couple of months..
400 was par for the course when I first started looking, but it seems the going rate has dipped a bit in the last month...
one was to be had on Audiogon in early April for 325.00 and another just sold on EBay for 256.00...
I'm not saying don't pull the trigger, if the funds are there, because I'm sure many will argue that $400 is still an awesome price when one considers cost/benefit....
still, there are a lot of individuals here, who have been at this hobby for a lot longer than yours truly, and might say otherwise...:)

zombie boy 2000 - I appreciate your opinions; trust me, my funds are pretty low right now after the two items I just bought! Like I said in the earlier post, it would be so convenient to get everything hooked up at the same time due to the piece of furniture it is going in but it may not happen. I will definitely keep a watch out for others and hopefully get a better price.

I'm in the same boat myself financially, in that I can afford to make the purchases, but am in no way in a position to cast money to the wind. It is my understanding that the Adcom 555 is an amp you can grow into and mates fairly well with Polk speakers. It's a workhorse, and should accomodate any future upgrades in the forseeable future. So again, taking into account cost/benefit.. 400.00 might be just right for ya.

Just hang in there. Here is another nice amp that should settle out around $400 on EBAY

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Parasound-HCA-12...QQcmdZViewItem

I completely understand wanting to hook it all up at once. It is such a pain moving large entertainment sections around to reconfigure equipment.

    Good luck in your search

What are you going to power with the amp? 5500 and 555 should be different sounding amps.

She's got RTi-10's. Running an AVR HT unit. Gonna use AVR pre-outs.
