They have some awesome jumps there. One is a 45' gap across the river where you need to be about 30' high at the peak (see pic). Check out silvertonmountain.com if you want to see some more pics.

    Default Show and Tell

I found this specimen yesterday while doing some work in my flower beds. She was standing motionless on an exterior wall of my house about four feet up from the ground. I have never encountered a black widow spider outdoors. I have found them in basements and crawl spaces. The crawl space in my house in Denver had a small nest of eleven adult black widows. I left them alone as they were in an out of the way corner and were helping to keep my insect population down.

I first thought this black widow was another type of spider because it is unusual to see black widows outside in broad daylight in a wide open area. When I got closer, I saw the characteristic red dot near the spinerettes. Once inside the glass, I could see the clearly defined red "hourglass" on her bottom.

She did not run when I got close and only started to move away as I was scooping her into a glass.

She is not dead in the photo. This is the classic defensive posture for a black widow who feels threatened. They will draw their legs in and lie on their backs to display the red hourglass symbol. This tells predators that "if you eat me, you'll be sorry".

This find was serendipitous because I needed a black widow for some research I am doing at the Louisiana State University Nuclear Science Center.;)

I suggest that you bombard her with neutrons or some other form of high energy radiation:D

The main problem is that the radiation dosage must be carefully measured so that the venom is irradiated high enough to cause the desired genetic mutation in the target and low enough so that the genetic characteristics of the spider are not altered in an undesirable way.

Relax. Everything will work out fine. I will be conducting rigorously controlled experiments in a laboratory environment. That spider fellow was the result of a chance meeting with an accidentally irradiated spider.

Only halfway, a rafter broke my fall so only my legs were sticking through. :o
