I bought the car with a known bad motor, '01 Dodge Stratus. The motor is a 2.7L, 24 valve, DOHC. Three of the rod bearings were toast and of coarse the rods were trashed as well. Since the rods are Fractured Rods no one makes aftermarket replacements but I found 3 off Ebay for $66 delivered to my door. So far I've got less than a grand in the motor and hopfully I can shoehorn everything back together this weekend.

The heavy sludge build up is not from neglect or lack of maintenence, or even using Pennzoil. Take a look at the pic that shows the crank and timing chain. See the gear above the crankshaft? Thats the waterpump....inside the engine. Guess what happens when you mix coolant and oil in a functional engine......only one guess per customer.


I didn't know about this problem until after I bought the car, but for $700 it's still a decent deal. The mileage on the odometer when it final gave up the ghost was 98k.


BTW, it's a Mitsubishi Motor.

I don't know if that's the same V6 that came in the Intrepids of that same era. But if so, it's a dog. A family at church had an Intrepid with a V6, and they went through THREE of those engines, then sold the car and bought a G6. I've heard there were lots of problems with that engine.

The Foothills Mall. I had my Galaxie in a couple of shows there a few years ago. I know it well as I pass by it often. My sister lives about a half mile from there. Plus I spend a lot of time on the Dragon. I did the Foothills Parkway/Dragon/Cherohala Skyway loop just a week ago.

Heading down Powers Blvd this morning, loads of traffic and my van makes a gawd awful noise. I fully expected to see pistons, lifters, and assorted transmission parts exiting from under the beast. The front end starts shaking and I go for the brakes and the peddle goes damn near to the floor. FOOKFOOKFOOK-AH-TEE_FOOK!!!

I finally got the screaming death beast stopped and hopped out to see smoke pouring out of the wheelwell. After getting a ride home on the back of a flat bed I pooped the cover off the lugs and found this....



I have absolutely no idea how this wheel stayed on. Inner and outer bearings are simply gone.

I'll be spitting BVD's for a few days.

I had to replace my rear bearings on my Honda Accord a few months ago......I honestly hadn't even heard of bearings needing to be replaced......lol......
