Yes, VR6 which is one half of the W configuration motors (more or less). The VR6 is called an In-line Vee because it only has a 15 degree offset between the cylinders thus, it can use a single head and fit where most std. V6's can't. You get the smoothness of an in-line and the sound is like no other V6. Very throaty and a nice growl.
The pics are from a 12 valve motor they also made a 24 valve motor with 4 cams in that head configuration.
The pics just took me by surprise and reminded me of FrankZ's pics.

You wouldn't want one of these to fall on you.

I am guessing the only way one of those could fall on you is if you lived on the floor below it...

Timing chain guides??? Valves since it's an interference engine??? The upper and lower chain guides and tensioner is a maintenance issue that is a bitch to fix. Normally they are stout, bullet proof engines but if the guides and/or tensioner goes it can cause some problems especially on the early dual chain VR's ('91-'95).

Yeah I had an early 90's (93 I think) Passat VR6. I think the official story (it was years ago and I was poor so all I heard was "thousands of dollars") was that the oil pump went, things seized, timing chain snapped, etc. Really just a bad bad run of luck, and even after I (stupidly) fixed it, it never really ran for long again.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
These might have been posted before, but are just DIY beautiful.

I can't say I understand this one. What am I missing?
well, it is either that it is a university (apparently) for one woman (woman's being singular possessive)
or, perhaps it is that exit "469" could be construed to have a sexual -- even homoerotic -- connotation (if the "4" is read as "for", e.g.)
all the best,
