    He's actually a checkered garter

Actually I'm wrong just noticed it is NJ, which is not native there. Eastern Garter

some more long-exposure fun, from last week (we're now, apparently, post-peak, firefly-wise):

The roughly horizontal streak is an airplane (ca. 30 second exposure); the more vertical, and fainter, streak above and to the right of the plane might have been a 'shooting star'?).

Thanks to growth in some (relatively) nearby towns, it's not as dark here now as it was 30-plus years ago when I first visited this neck of the woods... but we can still easily see the Milky Way on clear, moonless nights...which is pretty darned cool to me (having grown up in profoundly light polluted B-more).

It's just too darned easy to take photos like that with modern digital cameras :-P I set the ISO to 3200, shutter in the range of (EDIT) 10 to 20 - or so - seconds, and lens (a 50 mm AF-S Nikkor) wide open at f1.8. Used a tripod but no clockdrive; nonetheless, I guess the world doesn't turn all that much in 20 to 30 seconds.

As with film astrophotography, the digital sensor readily displays the difference in color (temperature) of different stars (or planets, for that matter), which is pretty cool.

Best night sky I've seen with my own personal eyes was in Bryce Canyon, Utah -- the sky looked like black velvet; and the stars seemed as though one could reach up and touch them -- there was no sense of scale or scope, looking up.

    I understand it's pretty amazing mid-ocean -- but I haven't had that opportunity.

The ultimate I've witnessed is the beauty in the UP (Michigan's Upper Peninsula). It may compare to your Utah experience. In fact, I might be going there late next month . . .
