Depends on the subs and the receiver.
Some receeivers have two or more sub outputs and some subs have crosovers which will allow you to use the pre/outs for the left and right channels to power them.
So it depends on what you have or are looking to buy.

The most common for Home Theater is to use a Y adapter to connect the LFE input for each sub to your single LFE output on your Home Theater Receiver. You can then use the volume control on each sub to adjust for room placement. This gets you the basic setup prior to any frequency equalizing that you might do. For music you might opt for each sub to be hooked up to the high level speaker outputs of your receiver, and then your main speakers hooked up to the high level speaker outputs on the sub. You then use the cross-over on the sub to control bass between the sub and your main speaker.
