Glad that you added the Hafler amp.. that was a good move. Sometimes older speakers tend to not seal as good as they used to when new.

If a sealed speaker like all the vintage Polks out there still. over time they tend to leak air. Those small leaks don't let the passive radiators perform like they use to.

You may need to remove the drivers and make sure they are all sealed as air tight as you can get them.

WHat else are you using for a receiver or pre amp?

Welcome to the forum.
You stuck with your speakers for 15 years, there must be something you liked.
You said the Hafler brought out things you had never heard before. Did the Hafler make your bass sound better or worse? Generally when you upgrade to better solid state amps you get better bass.
Room placement can improve your bass as well. Make sure you have a solid back wall behind your speaker, type of flooring, and how they are set up in relation to the floor can affect bass as well. Some other great advice on this thread.

I don't know if it'll help much with cleaning up the bass, but if you want to test if they're sealed all you have to do is lightly push in the passive radiator and hold it in. As you do this watch the mids. If the cabinet is truely sealed the mids should push outwards and hold in that position. What will most likely happen is that they'll slowly creep back into their usual position, but if they go back quickly even though you maintain a light pressure on the passive radiator you have a sealing issue.

My Monitor 7b's weren't sealed well when I got them. The back pannel vibrated and rattled when I turned them up a little so I had to take out the drivers and seal all the corners with some kind of caulking (can't remember what it was exactly).

Placement might be an issue here. I don't know how you have them placed now but if you can try and bring them out of any corners as well as off the back wall. You'll loose a lot of bass but it should sound a lot cleaner.

Oh my, I see what is happening... will have to think out what to say here... for one thing, Thanks to all who responded to my posting - never expected such a large and gracious response. I'll be back when I get my thoughts organized,, not much on 'real-time' comms.

How far out from the rear wall are they? Try these steps:

1. Increase distance from rear & side walls
2. Spike them and place them on tiles if your floor is carpeted
3. Try a speaker wire like AQ Type 4, AQ Bedrock, or Kimber 4TC

There are a number of things you can do to improve the RTA 15's other than running subs and effing with the mid - high area. Try getting better speaker cable, getting a real pre amp, better interconnect cables and upgrading the crossovers. I think you'll find a whole new level of performance from the 15's.
